Michael Michaud is a rare animal in the world of over-blown CA Pinots. His wine is classic burgundian style with the flair of high desert country. Superbly light silky texture with the perfect balance of fruit and terroir (because earth sounds bad to some). This is by far my favorite American Pinot and it is a rare beauty from a tiny AVA - Chalone. If you like delicate food-friendly artisan Pinots at a sane price, get a case. I'm on my second and fear he is running out of the 2001 vintage. This puppy ages magnificently.

Had this at Passionfish in Pacific Grove about 18 months ago. I don't know if they held the vintage back, or they were unfairly overlooked, but they were at 2001 while almost other wines on the list were already in the 2003-2004 vintages. we were really pleased with this wine. a nice Pinot that's not too overtly ripe (lots Pinots out there getting way too ripe), but quite classy and with just a hint of tannins.
