What to Expect

California has long struggled with Pinot Noir. Finding the right vineyards for this most fickle of grape, one that enjoys a cool growing season yet needs warmth close to harvest to fully ripen, has proven a challenge in such a sunny state. Cooler areas eventually became identified; the Santa Rita Hills, Russian River Valley and Mendocino's Anderson valley are all prime spots for Pinot Noir in California. Unlike the lighter colored and sometimes delicate Pinots of Burgundy, California produces many rich, deep Pinots full of slightly chewy dark berry and cherry fruits with hints of cola, Asian spices and forest floor frequently adding complexity.

Editorial Reviews

- lightly smoky and tarry but ultimately earthy cola, clove and allspice tinged black cherry fruit. While decidedly new world on the nose there is a bit of restraint and that earthiness that keeps this interesting.
- Medium bodied with good intensity to the earthy, slightly tarry black cherry and boysenberry fruit with a nice base of tannin and bright acid offering good support. Spiced cherry, cinnamon and other baking spices, flanked by a bit of powder and heat make way for tarter flavors of cranberry, cherry, a bit of citrus acidity, and loads of buttery oak.

In its High School yearbook, this wine was voted most likely to become Paul Newman's Butter Boom popcorn. There are some redeeming qualities, and the aroma is strong and pleasant, the way popcorn is. Recommend pairing with Schindler's list or The Fisher King.
