Responsible for overseeing Gruppo Mezzacorona, the Mezzacorona Societa Cooperativa Agricola was founded in 1904 as one of the first growers associations in Italy.  Currently occupying just under 6,500 acres at the foot of the Italian Dolomites, Gruppo Mezzacorona which produces all Mezzacorona products, combines both the traditional pergola system of growing with the more modern espalier system for enological operations.  While staying true to the natural balance of the grapes, Mezzacorona is equipped with the most modern enological equipment allowing them to produce upwards of 8 million gallons of wine annually. Wine production focuses on quality white production with special attention paid to their Pinot Grigios and Chardonnays, both grapes coming from the Valle dell’ Adige section of the vineyards.  Red production is centered on the Teroldego, followed closely by their Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, harvesting the grapes from the Piana Rotaliana and Lake Garda regions, respectively. Renowned for their consistent quality, Mezzacorona wines benefit from the unique landscape of the Trentino and Alto Adige regions of Italy.  For years Mezzacorona’s renowned winemakers have planted varietals in locations best suited for that varietal, being sure to takeg advantage of all the micro-climates the region has to offer. This has a textbook nose. Wild berries, herbs and light spice notes with hints of dried fennel and a touch of sun-dried tomato. It checks off all the boxes. Big and polished in the mouth, this has a lot of intensity but feels a touch extracted with big, dry tannins that clamp down on the back end. Until then, this sets out in a fairly elegant and finely balanced style with subtle clay soil notes, chalky tannins and a bit of heat. This is a classic Italian wine of texture. It is full, rich and a bit matte. The nose remains awfully pretty, so time might help reveal more on the palate. 88pts

Light and fruity on the nose with subtle herb and mineral backing notes giving the raspberry and wild strawberry fruits a bit of depth. In the mouth this is fully resolved, soft and juicy with excellent purity to the wild red berry fruit and a nice mineral bite on the finish in a medium bodied style. Not too complex, but well balanced and appealing for it's fresh fruit tones. 87pts.

Probably the most famous and common red wine in Trentino, Teroldego is a pretty strong and tasty red. Mezzacorona Teroldego is very easy to find and a perfect starting for whoever wants to discover this type of wine.

Had this 2005 edition recently. Quite disappointed. Watery more than fruity, but would do good on the terazza cooled to 12°C on a hot summer day.

Winemakers notes: Mezzacorona cultivates its own grapes in heart of the Dolomites along the Italian Alps. Every field is planted with single varietals and 100% single varietal wines are offered to the final consumer. The climate of the Italian Dolomites is characterized by a warm Mediterranean influence from the south and crystal clear sunlight. A fresh and wild breeze blows from the over 400 lakes and numerous glaciers of the surrounding mountains, peaking at over 9,000 feet. It is the ideal environment to create elegant, vivid and crispy varietal wines. The state-of-the-art wineries of Mezzacorona and the expertise of over 100 years of winemaking tradition preserve the elegance and crispiness of the solid and consistent wines that American consumers enjoy. This interesting red has a complex, characteristic fragrance with a pleasant ripe fruit aroma of prunes and blackcurrant. It is full-bodied and well-balanced with a soft mouthfeel.

Garnet. Fruity raspberry, melon, and red peach aromas and flavors on a dry-yet-fruity medium body with a tangy cigar and mineral fade.
