Mezzacorona Pinot Grigio Alto Adige Südtirol Riserva 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

The Pinot Grigio varietal has been cultivated since a long time in the Adige Valley, where it is also known as Ruländer. The shape of the bunches of grapes, copper-grey in colour, reveals its close relationship to the Pinot Nero from which it seems to derive. Favourable soils to its cultivation are both in the deep valley as well as on low hills. The Pinot Grigio Riserva is produced with grapes cultivated in the vineyards of one of the most traditional areas for this varietal: named “Zablani”, which is situated Northeast of Mezzocorona and characterized by watery soils and good drainage, very similar to the adjacent zone of Teroldego.

Responsible for overseeing Gruppo Mezzacorona, the Mezzacorona Societa Cooperativa Agricola was founded in 1904 as one of the first growers associations in Italy.  Currently occupying just under 6,500 acres at the foot of the Italian Dolomites, Gruppo Mezzacorona which produces all Mezzacorona products, combines both the traditional pergola system of growing with the more modern espalier system for enological operations.  While staying true to the natural balance of the grapes, Mezzacorona is equipped with the most modern enological equipment allowing them to produce upwards of 8 million gallons of wine annually. Wine production focuses on quality white production with special attention paid to their Pinot Grigios and Chardonnays, both grapes coming from the Valle dell’ Adige section of the vineyards.  Red production is centered on the Teroldego, followed closely by their Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, harvesting the grapes from the Piana Rotaliana and Lake Garda regions, respectively. Renowned for their consistent quality, Mezzacorona wines benefit from the unique landscape of the Trentino and Alto Adige regions of Italy.  For years Mezzacorona’s renowned winemakers have planted varietals in locations best suited for that varietal, being sure to takeg advantage of all the micro-climates the region has to offer. The colour is straw yellow with green highlights; to the nose it is intense and aromatic, with scents of green apple and citrus. The palate is fruity and tasty, lightly bubbly, with long and pleasant aftertaste. Ideal as an aperitif or with cold and tasty dishes based on crayfish, fish or white meats.

Oak and apple aromas. Flavors of honey, slightly floral, lightly oaked wine with medium acidity and a finish of baked pears.

Sour grassy aroma, with wet hay and wool, and mango. Very light body, but the butteriness holds it together, giving it good length.

citrus, lemon, grapefruit characteristics with small hints of vanilla. Some oak on the finish. Interesting, rounder quality unlike other Pinot Grigios I've drank

Soft lemon mineral nose. Moderate acidity, bready, soft. Not much of a standout to me.

Round, buttery nose with a strikingly emollient feel. Very oaky for a Pinot Grigio. Creamy finish on key lime pie. Too soft, buttery and dominated by the oak for me.

Tasting Notes:

Fragrance: complex, with notes reminiscent of ripe fruit (white peach, pear and mature camomile), well-harmonised by the sweet notes which derive from the refining in oak. Flavour: harmonious, elegant, refined with a fresh and elegant finish.
