Meyer-Nakel Spatburgunder Ahr 2015

Winemaker's Notes:

Werner Näkel's entry-level Spätburgunder is a classic study in terroir. His vineyard holdings cover a wide variety of soil compositions, each of which seems to express itself in orderly progression in this wine. The veins of red sandstone that run through some of his grand cru sites are reflected in a dusty, iron-rich quality on the mid-palate, while the blue and black slate soils that predominate in the region imbue the wine with a taut, smoky, mineral structure. The steep, south-facing slopes of the Ahr Valley are evident in the wine's concentrated red fruit aromas of currant and Bing cherry, but at this early stage in its development, the palate's fruit profile is only just starting to come together, and it will surely benefit from 3 to 5 years of cellaring.
