Mettler Family Vineyards Petite Sirah Lodi 2010

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Deep nose has nice notes of crushed currants, spice, tree bark, red currants, earth, clay, and subtle medicinal/menthol tones with a hint of curing tobacco. Big and bright in the mouth with the depth and richness that PS can deliver yet very little fat or flash. This is deep and plush with muscular fruit and ripe tannins. There’s a floral almost rose like note in the mouth with lots of earthy spice framing the black currant and mulberry fruit. Really well balanced particularly since the simplicity and rusticity of PS has not been entirely finessed away. Lovely freshness with a nice licorice/menthol medicinal tone and plenty of milk chocolate notes on the moderately long finish. Embryonic but super stuff even now. 94pts Wine of the night!

With their roots in the wine industry dating back to the 1770s, it’s no surprise that the Mettler Family is still growing grapes today. After migrating to the U.S. in the late 1800’s, the Mettler family migrated to California, where they knew that farming would bring success. The east side of the now famous Lodi region is where the first Mettler vineyards were planted by George Mettler which began the family's Lodi legacy. Carl Mettler, 4th generation farmer and George’s grandson, continued the family tradition and dedicated his life to farming his grandfather's land. Carl and his wife raised their family amongst their Lodi vineyards. Carl worked closely with nearby Universities and delegated several vineyard sites to experimental varieties. This experimentation helped to establish growing conditions for specific varieties in the Lodi region. Carl's dedication in the vineyard awarded him a spot in the Agricultural Hall of Fame. His integrity and love of the land is still being carried out by one of his three sons, Larry Phillip, who is also the receipient of the Agricultural Hall of Fame award and still farms the original Mettler Vineyards, along with his wife Char and their three children, Kimberly, Kelli and Adam. Complex, fruity and lingering finish. Needs a bit of air.

It's hard to imagine a more enjoyable wine experience. Sweet and spicy with chocolate and a huge range of dark fruits. Something different at every sip.

Nose of blueberry and boysenberry. Rich and powerful. Concentrated on the palate. Nice, but not very layered or complex.

One of the better wines I've tasted in recent months. Its great to find such a big-tasting Sirah.

Same flavors as the 2005 but not as much punch on the finish.
