Mettler Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Lodi 2004

Winemaker's Notes:

Deep, complex and polished, the Mettler Cabernet Sauvignon is indistinguishable in character and from its well known counterparts in the premium cabernet districts in California. Layers of supple black cherry, mocha and vanilla flavors, are underscored by pretty toasty oak and well-integrated tannins. A rich mouth-feel guides you gently toward the long, lush, elegant finish. The grapes chosen for this wine came from two of our outstanding blocks of Cabernet - both of which are planted from unique French clones. For each vineyard, the planting and trellis system were customized for the vineyard site. The vines on one of the vineyards, situated on a hillside, are contoured to follow the natural curvature of a bordering creek. The other vineyard has a unique trellis system to help the grapes ripen more evenly. A custom-designed modification to the VSP (vertical shoot postitioning) trellis system allows the fruit in this vineyard to bask in the morning sunlight but then shelters it from the afternoon sun. The crop level was controlled using various viticulture techniques and was farmed with the latest biologically integrated farming system practices. This includes a reduction of synthetic chemicals and fertilizers in the vineyard; controlled deficient irrigation; and cover crops, which help to maintain the structure and fertility of the soil. Oak: 13 months new and aged French oak

With their roots in the wine industry dating back to the 1770s, it’s no surprise that the Mettler Family is still growing grapes today. After migrating to the U.S. in the late 1800’s, the Mettler family migrated to California, where they knew that farming would bring success. The east side of the now famous Lodi region is where the first Mettler vineyards were planted by George Mettler which began the family's Lodi legacy. Carl Mettler, 4th generation farmer and George’s grandson, continued the family tradition and dedicated his life to farming his grandfather's land. Carl and his wife raised their family amongst their Lodi vineyards. Carl worked closely with nearby Universities and delegated several vineyard sites to experimental varieties. This experimentation helped to establish growing conditions for specific varieties in the Lodi region. Carl's dedication in the vineyard awarded him a spot in the Agricultural Hall of Fame. His integrity and love of the land is still being carried out by one of his three sons, Larry Phillip, who is also the receipient of the Agricultural Hall of Fame award and still farms the original Mettler Vineyards, along with his wife Char and their three children, Kimberly, Kelli and Adam.
