Meschach Shiraz Grant Burge 2001

Winemaker's Notes:

Ripe and gooey, dense with delicious cherry pie, blackberry and licorice flavors that persist through a long, glorious finish. Has depth and presence, a real candidate for triumph after long-term cellaring. Best after 2011.(WS)

Grant Burge is a fifth-generation Barossa vigneron and winemaker. Throughout his career, Grant has been one of the most respected and innovative forces in the Australian wine industry. The history of the Burge family and their long association with winemaking in the region can be traced back to March 1855, when noted tailor John Burge immigrated to the Barossa from Hillcot, near Pewsey in Wiltshire, England with his wife Eliza and their two sons. With help from his sons Meshach and Henry, John’s farm flourished with wheat, sheep and viticulture. His eldest son Meshach continued the farming tradition and was a prominent community leader. He married Emma in the early 1900s and they had eight children. First-born Percival established the Wilsford Winery in 1916, beginning the Burge winemaking tradition. Percival had two sons, Noel and Colin, and Colin and his wife Nancy had one son, Grant. Following in the footsteps of his father and forefathers before him, Grant now carries the winemaking tradition into the 21st century Read less

I can't speak exactly for the 2001 but a bottle of 1995 Meschach I drank in 2003 was one of the top 5 bottles I have ever enjoyed in my life. A huge wine that had mellowed and structured into a a smooth, heady finish. Even other 1995's that I subsequently bought could not touch the majesty of that first 1995.

Gorgeous on the nose: clove, tree bark, black pepper and fruit that is still hibernating. On the palate, it's sexy and layered, with meat accents to the plum fruit and a silky texture that trails on through the long, nut-laden finish. Nice now, but i... Wine Enthusiast. A Syrah wine from South Australia in Australia. 2001 Grant Burge Shiraz Meshach 750ml
