Merus began as the quintessential “garage wine,” made by Merus founders Erika J. Gottl and Mark Herold in the two-car garage behind their home in the town of Napa. The wine won international renown starting with its first vintage in 1998, but the garage imposed serious limitations. The very hands-on Merus winemaking regimen was cramped by lack of space, wine storage had to be outsourced, and legal restrictions barred visitors or tastings. When William Foley brought Merus into his Foley Family Wines group at the end of 2007, one of his first goals was to find a Napa Valley winery site worthy of the brand. A few months later he acquired a historic ranch tucked into a canyon on the east side of the valley. One of Napa’s fabled “ghost wineries,” it had been abandoned in the wake of Prohibition and only recently brought back to life. Now the fully updated winery includes custom-made winemaking equipment and 7,000 square feet of caves for barrel storage. The winery’s new tasting salon and a second tasting area in the caves were stunningly renovated by Merus co-founder Erika Gottl’s Amsterdam-based UXUS design consultancy. Because our production is so restricted, the winery and its tasting salon are closed to the general public and may only be visited by invitation. Read less

very concentrated fruit, packed tight with blue and black fruit. Powerful tannins build a big towards a nice explosive finish. Not for the novice cab drinker. The oak was there but stayed in the background promoting licorice, graphite, a little leather and fresh earth. A blockbuster wine from a blockbuster vintage! Cant wait to crack another one in 4 or 5 years! I agree - a new CULT classic so buy it up folks!

Exhibits an inky/purple color as well as an extraordinary bouquet of blueberry liqueur intermixed with graphite, charcoal, cassis, and spice. Full-bodied, powerful, and rich with chocolaty espresso notes intermixed with blackberries and blueberries.

WA 95pts , WS 92pts - According to Robert Parker - Merus s 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits an inky/purple color as well as an extraordinary bouquet of blueberry liqueur intermixed with graphite, charcoal, cassis, and spice. The wood seems pushed to the background given the extraordinary concentration of fruit. Full-bodied, powerful, and rich with chocolaty espresso notes intermixed with blackberries and blueberries, this pure, impressively textured, long Cabernet should evolve for two decades.

Although closed at present, Merus' inky/purple-colored 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon displays enormous power and richness. It is a massive, blockbuster-styled effort possessing black fruits, plenty of spicy oak, hints of licorice and graphite, and mouth-st... Robert Parkers Wine Advocate. The 2006 Merus is deep inky purple in color with intense aromas of black cherries, layered with exotic spice, hints of cinnamon, mocha, dark chocolate, cassis and blackberries.

The home property of the successful husband and wife team of winemaking guru Mark Herold and his graphic designer wife, Erika Gottl, Merus has produced a blockbuster 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon. These cuvees are made from super-ripe fruit, spend 18-20 months in 100% new French oak (usually Taransaud), and are bottled without fining or filtration. A blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot and Malbec, the full-bodied, dense 2004 offers notes of blackberries, blueberries, espresso roast, and smoky oak, a super-rich mouthfeel, good freshness and purity, and enough acidity and tannin to provide structure as well as definition. It will be delicious young, but should become more civilized in 4-5 years, and keep for two decades

This is a heavy wine, which is clearly evidenced by the thick black core, barely encircled by a dense ruby red rim. Sweet dark fruit aromas - plum and cassis - jump from the glass first, followed by sweet cedar, lilac and violet. The fruity, floral c... Mike Supple.
