What to Expect

California's Napa Valley has been a source of world-class Cabernet Sauvignon for well over a century. Its warm climate and varied terrain allows for many styles of wine. One thread that runs through almost all the Cabernet based wines from Napa is their lush, ripe full-bodied feel and rich flavors of currant and berry. Wines from the valley floor, particularly around Rutherford, are famed for a dusty quality and those coming from the hillsides surrounding the valley, Mt. Veeder, Diamond Mountain and Howell Mountain for example, tend to be a little leaner with more obvious structural elements.

Winemakers Notes

2005 Merus Cabernet Sauvignon 96ptsWS "Superrich, smooth and creamy. A seductive style that balances ripe, concentrated currant, cherry, fresh earth, mineral and sage notes with toasty, cedary oak. Ends with a powerful yet elegant finish that keeps pumping out the flavors. Fine-grained tannins bode well for the future. Drink now through 2015."96+ptsRP "As for their own wines, all of which come from southern Napa sites in Oak Knoll and Coombsville, the 2005 is certainly one of the finest wines they have yet made. This was very different in style than anything on the table yet. Big brooding and well structured with very masculine lines. Nice dark black hole fruits of currant and boysenberry with some pomegranate. There was some soy and tarry leather. Consistent notes from previous visits with this wine. What a great wine with certain QPR for its price rage and certainly here tonight. 93/100

Full-bodied, with great power, richness, and sensational length, this wine will benefit from 4-5 years of bottle-age and last three decades.

IWC 92-95 (6/2007): Deep, bright ruby. Reticent but pure aromas of black cherry, cassis, bitter chocolate, licorice and minerals. Broad in the mouth if not yet as filled in as the 2004; but this has a solid, dense core of sappy fruit and a firm shape. Less sweet and obvious than the 2004 but the acids are nicely integrated and the substantial, tongue-dusting tannins arrive late. Quite different in shape from the 2004 and potentially more sophisticated. "Two thousand five could have been an austere year for those who picked too early," observed Erika Gottl.
