Merry Edwards Sauvignon Blanc Russian River Valley 2012

Winemaker's Notes:

PinotFile: This wine is barrel fermented with lees stirring, giving it an uncommon richness and complexity on the palate. Moderate straw color and clear in the glass. Perfumed with lychee and floral notes, tasting of fresh melon, pear and pink grapefruit, and laced with bright acidity, this wine is highly versatile at the table. This beautifully crafted wine has none of the unpleasant grassiness found in many Sauvignon Blancs. My favorite California Sauvignon Blanc along with that produced by Soliste. (6/19/13)

Tropical, fresh and creamy. Nothing average about this Sauvignon Blanc.

Big, fruity—sweet apple—nose. Plenty of that same fruitiness on the tongue, maybe with some apricot flavor—it’s almost, but not quite sweet. Then, I get a bit of minerality. The wine seems to be a bit viscous. At the back of the palate there seems to be some effervescence. All the fruitiness in this wine makes me think that it would pair well with fish served with a mango salsa or chicken with chutney.

a bit more lively and floral but not quite as rich as 2008 - still a killer Blanc, esp. for the challenging 08 vintage. There is also now an unbelievable late-harvest dessert SB recently released, as well (from 08) - not much made so hurry on both...

Lovely honeysuckle, peach and melon on the nose. Great acidity on a creamy palate coating texture. Very nice. - Tasted at Marché Bacchus 7/24/10

A solid new world Sauvignon Blanc. Lacks the piercing acidity and grassy flavor of a NZ SB. The wine has an attractive nose, a light oak, citrus and slight tropical (pineapple/mango) on the palate.

The aroma is floral and mouthwatering, layered with ripe melon, peach and subtle mineral highlights. In the mouth, it is rich and seamlessly well balanced, kicking in a hint of grapefruit, cirrus and pear on the lingering finish.

Sophisticated and polished, this wine reflects its mature, low-yielding vineyard components. The aroma is bursting with lychee fruit, fig, guava and ripe pear.

Merry and Ken completed their state-of-the-art winery facility in 2008 on the site of Coopersmith Vineyard. Merry’s focus is on handcrafted wines and site-specific viticulture. This Sauvignon Blanc is one of their most popular wines. More than 50% of the fruit is from vines 25 to 35 years old. Sauvignon Musqué or Savagnin Musqué fruit as it is known in Bordeaux, makes up about 20% of the blend. The wine is barrel fermented with biweekly lees stirring to give the wine richness and texture. This 2011 received much critical acclaim. It scored 93 points from the Connoisseurs Guide and 91 points from the Wine Spectator who said "An aromatic white, with toasty smoke notes up front that give way to peach blossom and honeysuckle details, balancing the ripe peach and nectarine flavors. Features firm acidity, a smooth body and a very spicy finish. Drink now. "

Aromas of melon, grapefruit and flowers, complicated by minerals and toast. Supple and lightly saline, with an umami richness of texture to the ripe flavors of peach, pear and flowers. Mellow acidity accentuates the wineandrsquo;s leesy opulence. Finishes with good persistence.

A smooth and silky white, showing spicy details of nutmeg and quince that are joined by pure, ripe honeydew melon and cantaloupe flavors. Pear, lemon zest and apricot notes are elegant, lithe and nicely juicy on the finish. Drink now through 2015.
