What to Expect

Sauvignon Blanc is a refreshingly crisp white wine that offers citrus and tropical fruit flavors with very aromatic notes of green chilies, grass, herbs, asparagus and gooseberries commonly contributing to the bouquet. Sauvignon Blanc is generally unaoked allowing the fruit to shine and highlighting the delicacy of the grape.

Winemakers Notes

We source these Sauvignon Blanc grapes from a small collection of excellent properties throughout Russian River Valley. The enduring foundation for this wine since its inception in 2001 has been Dutton-Cohen. Located above Occidental, it was established some thirty years ago and is farmed with care by Joe and Steve Dutton. The blend is now supplemented by the new Dutton-Jewell Ranch in Green Valley. The Dutton family planted this exclusively for us in 2005, to the Sauvignon Musqué clone. Other contributors are Crinella and La Rochelle vineyards on the Santa Rosa Plain and our own Cresta d’Oro read more...

"…over the years, there have been a few sauvignon blancs from California I've liked, but none ever came close to those made by Merry Edwards… Beginning with the 2001 vintage, her first signature sauvignon blanc, have been recognized as truly world-class and the 2005, 2006, and 2007 scored particularly well with the critics… The (2008) has not yet been reviewed by the major critics, but it confirmed my belief that sauvignon when grown from the best clone in the right soil and made in the style of the best of Loire sauvignon blanc, they can be as rich and complex as the greatest white wines read more...

"The highly acclaimed Merry Edwards Sauvignon Blanc is no ordinary version of this popular varietal. The 2006 was ranked 37th in Wine Spectator’s “Top 100 Wines of 2008.” James Laube of Wine Spectator wrote about the 2007, “… the greatest Sauvignon Blanc that I have ever had from anywhere.” I’m not one to argue. The 2008 model is a volcanic eruption of tropical fruit and blossoms—a masterful use of oak—no spit bucket needed."

Round sweetness, floral, light acidic, big body. Peach, apricot. I guessed a Gewurztraminer - this doesn't have any of the Sauvignon Blanc characteristics. $40
