Merry Edwards Russian River Valley Pinot Noir 2014

Member Review by EMark:

Darker than many popular PNs, these days. Light hit of plum flavors on entry. Very nice. A bit of bitterness towards the rear of the tongue/palate. My suspicion that it is tannin. This is not a wine with “puckery” tannin—no surprise there—but I can’t image where that sensation comes from. Meanwhile the time it takes me to write this is longer than the sensation is observable. This wine does fall into the “elegant” or soft category. IPOB aficionados have no reason to fear this one even though I’m pretty sure that Merry Edwards is the Anti-IPOB.

Brooding, earthy nose with a hint of phenols. Like so many California PNs, the first taste is cherry, but, then, a good thing—as the wine moves over the palate, I get more of a blackberry flavor and acid and tannin structure add significant complexity. Acid/tannin suggests to me that there is some significant aging potential, here.

Light rose petal color. Ripe red fruit aromas on the nose. Strawberries and sour cherries up front. well balanced through the finish. The acidity tickles the eougne on the very end creating a pleasing sensation for several minutes afterwords.

I paired this Pinot with venison last night. With bursts of juicy red fruits and smoldering spice on the tounge it made a fantastic combo.

Each year I enjoy the challenge of creating our Russian River Valley Pinot Noir. Grapes from six different vineyards and 17 individual lots of wine were woven together in tapestry-like fashion to form this intricate blend. Each small batch was made using customized techniques to enhance its own unique clone and adaptation to the site where it was grown. Perhaps whole clusters were added to the fermenting tank or the length of the cold soak period was extended. Barrels were then selected to amplify the fruit character and mouthfeel. The resulting Pinot Noir reflects the personality of our region in bold style. The jeweltoned rich, ruby color portends an aroma that is revealed as fresh and appealing. Dark blue plum, red currant, hedgerow fruit and raspberry coulis come forward first. Deeper layers reveal hints of fragrant earth, warm brown spices and cocoa. In the mouth, the wine is juicy on entry, broad in the midpalate and shows smooth, firm tannins on an extended finish. Supported by good acidity, the balance of this Pinot predicts excellent ageability. - Winery ** Only 12 in Stock **

One of California’s first woman winemakers, Merry Edwards career has been nothing short of astounding. Starting at the venerable Mount Eden Vineyards in the Santa Cruz Mountains in 1974, she went on to become the founding winemaker at Matanzas Creek in 1977. Merry has consulted for countless wineries, large and small, throughout California and Oregon. In 1997 she founded Merry Edwards Winery, with a focus on producing Pinot Noirs with a sense of place from Russian River Valley and Sonoma Coast. For this 2013 Russian River Pinot, grapes from six different vineyards and 17 individual lots of wine were woven together in tapestry-like fashion to form an intricate blend. Wine Enthusiast Magazine scored this 95 points saying "The producer's larger production offering, this in no way suffers from not having a vineyard designated on its name, instead showing the prowess of blending and delivering a big, bold style with elegance and grace. Tangy cranberry and orange rind wrap themselves around powerful acidity and a silky body, finishing in varietal earth and cardamom spice." Limited!

On first impression, the aroma is pure fruit -- fresh blackberry, dark plum, black raspberry and huckleberry. Add to this currants, strawberry jam, cassis and cherry pie. Sarsaparilla, Lapsang Souchong tea, cocoa, roasted-toasty oak and a bit of vanilla bean round out this Pinot's complex persona.

Tight, firm and vibrant, full-bodied, with a mix of fresh earth, mineral and dusty berry fruit that gets a nice lift on the finish, where this is the most complex and tempting. Drink now through 2015.

A blend of seven vineyards scattered across the valley, this is a full-bodied, ripe Pinot Noir whose tannins suggest cellaring. Thoroughly dry, it shows deep notes of blackberries, black cherries, clove and pepper spice and smoky, vanilla-scented sandalwood. Feels elegant. Give it until 2013, at least.

Medium to dark garnet in color, this wine has a very pretty nose of raspberry and an interesting dichotomy between an airy sweetness and a briary quality that speaks to deeper complexity. In the mouth it is lithe and slippery, and almost more aromatic than it is flavorful. Beautiful bright raspberry flavors with hints of cedar swirl on the palate coursing over nice smooth, faint tannins that are balanced with excellent acidity.
