Merry Edwards Pinot Noir Russian River Valley Meredith Estate 2013

Winemaker's Notes:

On first impression, this Pinot expresses a rich perfume reminiscent of fraises des bois enhanced with scents of violets, ripe blueberries and fresh rose blossoms. Accents of cardamom, toffee, pepper, cherry cola and anise add exotic notes. Deeper strata reveal a ripe, dark berry core with restrained toasty, savory and gamey undertones. On the first sip, this elegant yet bold wine shows a ripe entry, dense with black fruit. Its profile displays a fine balance with firm, bright acidity and smooth yet weighty tannins.

Merry Edwards continues to be a benchmark producer for California Pinot and this year's Meredith keeps that reputation going. There's something faintly floral about the nose coming alongside blueberries, pepper and spice. The palate is richly layered, with perfect acidity and more tannins than you might expecting giving this wine great cellaring potential.

A very nice Pinot Noir, complex with good fruit, earthy notes, nice soft tannins, good acidity; took some time to open up, decanted the wine gave it an hour to breathe. Approaching a Burgundian style, a good wine to open the door to Burgundy for CA wine drinkers.

Excellent Russian River Pinot. Very well balanced between fruit, oak, tannins, alcohol and acidity. We picked this particular bottle out of the several pinots we tried at our private tasting in the fall of 2010.

Tight and compact, yet offers a broader range of flavors, with rich black cherry and blackberry fruit and hints of anise and cedar. Finishes with a long, intricate aftertaste.
