Premium Wines Crafted With a Personal Touch The beautifully neat vineyards of MontGras, in the locality of Palmilla, Colchagua, VI Region of Chile, represent the concrete testimony of the development and the desire to do things right that have always characterized the Gras brothers, Hernán and Eduardo, along with partner Cristián Hartwig. Inspired by Hernán Gras, who has a brilliant winemaking trajectory in Canada, along with the entrepreneurial vision of his brother Eduardo and Hartwig's pragmatic businesses view, who comes from a winemaking family and who in addition has strong bonds with Colchagua, joined together to give to life to Viña MontGras in 1993, the first project of MontGras Properties. MontGras, that has always had state-of-the-art technology in all its processes, set out from its conception to be the winery with the best premium wine from Chile. It is no accident then, the great amount of international prizes that have recognized the professional work, the constant quality and the innovation of MontGras wines. In this, like corporative culture, people have been key. As Hernán Gras, Chairman of the Board says, "our philosophy has to do with producing quality Chilean wines at exceptional value, which reflect the specific terroir from where the grape come from. Although we count on the equipment and the technology, it is definitively our people that make the difference. To create a wine is a true art in which all the senses are used." Read less

James Molesworth’s Recommended Wines From Chile: Top Values/ Ripe, pure and focused, with a beam of raspberry ganache framed nicely by integrated vanilla and spice-infused toast. The long, fleshy finish has nice drive.

Viña MontGras, in Chile’s Colchagua Valley, was established in 1992 by brothers Hernán and Eduardo Gras, together with their partner Cristián Hartwig. The fruit of a mission to produce estate-grown wines of exceptional quality and originality, the MontGras estate today encompasses over 200 hectares planted to vine in the heart of Chile’s wine-producing region. Since the first harvest in the early 1990s, MontGras wines have earned over 200 medals and awards worldwide, garnering international critical acclaim. Santiago Margozzini serves as head winemaker. Production Area Chile’s Colchagua Valley, located between the Coastal Range and the Andes. Grape Varieties 90% Merlot, 10% Carmenere Vinification Grapes are hand-harvested in April. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. After the maceration period, 40% of the wine is aged for eight months in French and American (50/50) oak barrels. Color Deep ruby red with violet undertones Bouquet Expressive aromas of plums and cherries, vanilla, cedar and a touch of mint. Taste Ripe plum flavors mingle with deep, dark fruit flavors. A touch of mint and toasty oak give this wine an elegant and charming finish. Alcohol 14% Serving Suggestions Best when served with steak, lamb, tomato-based pasta dishes, and soft cheeses.

Merlot Reserva 2007 - 88 Points, International Wine Cellar/ Deep ruby. Dark berries, cherry and cured meat on the nose. Fleshy and gently sweet, with surprisingly deep dark berry and candied cherry flavors and a late note of licorice. Finishes with persistent sweetness and an echo of dried flowers. For merlot, this is an absolute steal.

/ Well proportioned and solid, with pure cherry and berry characteristics alongside notes of tobacco and sugar beet. A bit tannic and firm, but not overly so; the finish offers mocha and plenty of berry extract.

Today's Picks - 2/18/05/ Good, straightforward red and dark berry fruit here, though a slightly raisined edge comes in on the finish. Notes of chocolate and toast as well.

Smart Buys; Six Merlots for $23 or Less/ Amped-up with quite a bit of toast; there's also plenty of red and black currant and boysenberry fruit and an interesting Cabernet-like graphite edge. Nice focus and solid grip on the finish. From Chile. Drink now through 2005. 15,500 cases made.
