Mercurey Blanc Premier Cru "Les Veleys " Raquillet 1998

Member Review by duncan 906:

I bought this bottle of wine for £15 from the website www.bidforwine.co.uk/auctions/show/123516. Mercurey is an appellation created in1936,although there has been viticulture here for centuries for red and white wines from the two communes of Mercurey and Saint Martin sous Montaigue on the Cotes Chalonaise in Burgundy.90% of Mercurey wines are red but my bottle is a white. There are no Grand Cru vineyards but 32 Premier Cru one of which is Les Veleys. My bottle is 100% chardonnay from 60 year old vines and spent time in oak barrels.I started my bottle last night with my supper of fish cakes. The wine was a deep amber colour. There was some concentrated melon, peach and sour apple fruit with a strong citrus finish. There was certainly plenty of flavour. Bland or mineral this is not. In short this is a very nice wine that would probably pair well with many foods

François Raquillet:
Francois Raquillet's family have been involved in viticulture since the 17th century and he started working with his father on their 11 hectare domaine in 1984 and took over with his wife Emmanuelle when his father reired in 1995. The domaine produces a range of both red and white Burgundy wines and has a high reputation as Francois has reduced yeilds and begun using better quality oak barrels
