Mercer Wine Estates Cabernet Sauvignon Horse Heaven Hills 2014

External Review by We Speak Wine:

WINEMAKER’S NOTES: Aromas of blueberry, dark plum, and blackberry jam blend with hints of sweet caramel and cocoa powder. In the palate, the ripe fruit is framed by powdery tannins. The well integrated oak and dusty tannins lead into a velvety finish with a nice touch of acidity on the end. This wine is a lovely balance of power and grace. VINEYARD SOURCE: The grapes for this wine come from our acclaimed estate vineyards in the Horse Heaven Hills. GROWING SEASON: 2014 was one of the hottest years on record. A moderate winter lead into a warm spring and a very hot summer. The warm spring resulted in an early bloom, which caused veraison to occur 2-3 weeks earlier than normal, and began harvest a week ahead of schedule. A warm, dry September allowed for longer hang time of the grapes which contributed to concentrated flavor development along with ripe tannins. WINEMAKING: These grapes were double sorted, fifirst in the vineyard with the selective harvest on our Pellenc harvesters, then again at the winery on our sorting table. The fruit was not crushed in order to preserve as much whole-berry as possible. At the winery, individual lots were fermented in stainless steel tanks. Twice daily pumpovers allowed gentle extraction of color and tannins. After draining the wine and pressing the skins, the wine was racked to a blend of French and American oak barrels for malolactic fermentation. The wine was aged in barrel for 20 months before being blended together for bottling. Blend: 75% Cabernet Sauvignon 12% Syrah 12% Merlot 1% Petit Verdot Alcohol: 14.1% T.A.: 0.53 g/100 ml pH: 3.79

This wine opens with ripe blackberry and cherry with scents of oak spice and vanilla in the aroma. Flavors of cherry and spice combine with a rich mouthfeel, good structure and a long, supple finish.
