Mer Soleil 'Silver' Unoaked Chardonnay 2016

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

This smells very ripe and tropical with pineapple and mango aromas. This delivers a mouthful of relatively soft if intensely pineapple and mango flavored wine. It's round and easy going with a short finish. 82pts

Deep golden color, which I wasn't expected for an unoaked chard. Nice warm, bright fruit on the nose. Nectarine, peach, some lemon and light minerality. Very nice mouthfeel and vibrant acid on the palate. Wonderful vivacity and brightness. Peach, apricot, nectarine and a nice lemon tartness. Really nice fruit unencumbered by oak. Pleasant light minerality. Nice wine! HIghly recommended easy drinking unoaked chard. 90 pts. 3/1/13

Somewhat on the citrus fruit side of chardonnay but not the crisp, minerally style, kind of in between with some oak but not buttery, fruit but more citrus than apple.

according to Elin McCoy article http://www.zesterdaily.com/drinking/1317-2010-mer-soleil-silver-chardonnay-wine-review "This lemony 2010 Mer Soleil Silver Chardonnay from California's Santa Lucia Highlands is pure and crisp, with weight and richness but without the telltale vanilla notes of new oak aging."

The wine is fermented and aged in natural cement tanks imported from France, allowing for this varietals clean aromas to shine bright. This wine sees no wood, helping to maintain the bright fruit characters and minerality produced from the Chardonnay grapes.A pale yellow hue, the wine is well balanced with great structure. Bright minerality, pink grapefruit and key lime characters shine through on the nose, followed by lemon zest and stone-fruit. The mid-palate displays intriguing notes of lemon meringue, quince and citrus, complemented by a crisp acidity that carries through from start to finish. The higher acidity in this wine makes it a perfect accompaniment to a wide array of food, particularly salads, grilled seafood, tomato-based dishes and fresh oysters. - Winery

Mer Soleil’s latest offering is certainly eye-grabbing given its silver ceramic bottle. Its made with grapes from the Santa Lucia Highlands AVA (part of the larger Monterey AVA). Light straw in color with aromas of applesauce and stone fruit with a hint of spice (cinnamon?) and green peppercorn. Creamy flavors of white peach grapefruit and tropical fruit with undertones of buttered popcorn. The ample acidity present in this beauty is brought on no doubt by the absence of oak aging and is a refreshing reminder of how adaptable Chardonnay can be. This wine would certainly pair well with grilled or roasted poultry as well as various other dishes usually reserved for acidic Italian white wines or Sauvignon Blanc. I love that this wine remains full and robust without the presence of oak. Drink now and often.

Lemon hued and extremely tropical on the nose this is captured sunshine in a bottle from Caymus. Central coast fruit at its best. The chardonnay varietal is naked to any influence of oak creating a bevy of tropical fruits including but not limited to star fruit guava cherimoya jackfruit passion fruit rambutan and loganberry. The palate is luxurious like a relaxing sun drenched beach of the tropics. Purity of the chardonnay grape is featured here. Will pair well with a plethora of cuisines or enjoy on its own. Clean, fresh and juicy, with pure honeydew melon notes, subtle citrus shadings and a hint of cream. Drink now through 2016.

lighter on its feet, clean and crisp, bright and steely. This Silver Chardonnay from Mer Soleil is, as the name suggests, an alternative to the gold label.

This wine has a strong mineral nose with hints of citrus. Due to it's fermentation in cement tanks the palate is soft and round with strong acidity and flavors of lemons, gooseberry and grapefruit. The finish is dry with a good balance of acid and mineral.
