The wine opens with tropical fruit and honeysuckle aromas. Luxurious flavors of creme brulee and even a hint of butter are framed by notes of fine oak and the lively acidity of citrus zest. The mouth-feel is full and lush and brings all the wine's elements through to a long, persistent finish.
Even though the label says Central Coast, the primary source for Mer Soleil’s Chardonnay is a vineyard at the very northern tip of Monterey’s Santa Lucia Highlands AVA, a chilly spot for grape growing. The vineyard, first developed in 1988, is named for the two factors that influence its growing conditions: the sea (mer) and sun (soleil). (I suppose they could have added the wind and the fog, but never mind.) The vineyard has multiple clones of Chardonnay on three types of trellising systems. In some years, winemaker Charlie Wagner II also uses a little Chardonnay from the somewhat warmer Las Alturas Vineyard – which is also owned by the Wagner family of Caymus fame and planted mostly to Pinot Noir for the Belle Glos label – but the 2005 fruit all came from the cooler site. Mer Soleil Chardonnay is barrel fermented, then aged in French oak barrels, about 40 percent of them new. This is always a riper-style Chardonnay, but it also has lots of zingy acidity, along with flavors of grapefruit, lemon, pear and some creamy vanilla accents. This Chardonnay would provide a good counterpoint to any sort of seafood in a creamy sauce or perhaps shrimp scampi.
Mer Soleil Silver Unoaked Chardonnay Santa Lucia /06 A new Wagner family project from the owners of Caymus. The wine is fresh and clean with intense spice and mineral intertwined throughout the lush fruit, with a long powerful finish. The fruit is sourced from the same vineyard as Mer Soleil but no oak here!
2005 Mer Soleil Chardonnay is made in a complex, barrel-fermented style reminiscent of the white wines of Burgundy but with the generous sun-ripened flavors of California, Mer Soleil is produced by Charles J. Wagner and his son, Charles F. Wagner II. They grow fruit at the Mer Soleil Vineyard in the Santa Lucia Highlands American Viticultural Area (AVA) in Monterey County, California. The site is nestled on an east-facing lower slope of the Sierra de Salinas range, which provides a barrier from the Pacific Ocean. This Chardonnay has Mer Soleil's signature aromas of tropical fruit (mango, honeysuckle and citrus) with notes of toasted spice (clove, nutmeg). This is a california wine
