Jean-Nicholas Méo could not have been much more enthusiastic about his 99s. He believes 99 is a great vintage with superb quality across all of his appellations. He enjoyed ideal harvest conditions with almost perfect ripening of the grapes with no triage (sorting) necessary. Yields were reasonable though he did employ a saignée (bleeding off of a small percentage of the unfermented must right after crushing) for the Les Chaumes and, interestingly enough, a reverse osmosis process for another two cuvées to concentrate the must by approximately 4% (reverse osmosis removes water from the read more...

Ripe, explosive, spicy and sexy with wonderfully perfumed black fruit aromas followed by intense, powerful and sappy flavors blessed with a solidly tannic spine and excellent length. Perhaps it's just the stage that it's in but this seems fairly awkward today and well short of the potential that I saw in barrel. This is a wine that I would like to revisit in 5 years or so. It also struck me as though it was on the verge of shutting down for a while so perhaps it's simply a stage because it was monumental from cask.
