After a dream vintage like 1999, Jean-Nicholas Méo was more reserved about his 2000s, calling it a very good vintage but one that presented certain challenges. In particular, he said that very careful triage work was an absolute necessity. Yields came in somewhat lower than in '99 at between 40 to 43 hl/ha for the villages and 1ers and about 32 hl/ha for the grands crus. Acidities were on the low side and pHs varied between 3.5 and 3.75. Méo said the wines had not been racked since they went into barrel and at this point in their evolution, he described them as a bit closed and rustic. The wines read more...

Explosive black, sexy, powerful and dense fruit coupled with oriental spice and traces of earth followed by rich, extremely long flavors of cassis, soy and buckets of pinot extract and an incredibly long finish that boasts coffee and chocolate notes. The tannins are quite fine and very ripe and the impression is one of sweetness and perfect balance. This is a real show stopper though some of the exuberance it displayed a few years ago is now gone and has been replaced by the first signs of maturing fruit. Still, it's clear that this has a long way to go and even 2011 may be too early. Stay tuned.

Bright medium ruby. Crunchy raw berries, flowers, dark chocolate and tangy oak spices on the urgent nose. Big, sappy and complete; wonderfully sweet dark berry, floral and mineral flavors. In the style of the Brulees but with more volume and opulence. Finishes impressively long, with very fine, spreading tannins.
