Melville Syrah Estate Verna's Santa Barbara County 2013

Member Review by EMark:

More purple than red color. Something of a musty, fungal nose. On the tongue this wine seems viscous. Red berry fruit and blueberry—OK, not red--on entry. It is close to being annoyingly sweet, but, somehow, it backs away. Earthy mid-palate. Another pretty-easy-to-drink-but-not-terribly-sophisticated wine.

took this to a friend's house who was serving jambalaya and loved it!... the Melville that is. The jambalaya wasn't too bad either.

It took a while to open up but all my family loved this wine. Very smooth, rich, and yummy. This wine deserves Parker Point 93 for sure. I bought the same wine from the vintage year of 2008, but I was disappointed. The vintage year of 2006 is much much better.

This wine has an electric dark purple color that is immediately accessible and full of dark fruits of boysenberry, cherry and currants juxtaposed against a fresh meat quality. Floral and spice aromatics drift towards lavender and wisteria, cocoa chocolate, autumnal spices, anise, white pepper and clove. Earthy notes of thyme, tobacco, black olives and graphite/pencil lead also emanate. On the palate, the wine has great presence and deftly weaves all these components together.

Brimming with nuances of dark plum, wild strawberry and dried fig that merge with an intriguing collection of wild flowers, hoisin, malt, dried meat and lavender. The mouthfeel skillfully weaves this diversity together allowing the wine to remain both fresh, grippy and savory.

This incredibly aromatic syrah showcases an array of black and blue fruits, complemented by savory winter herbs, dried florals, tapenade, and a hint of tar. Dense and luscious on the palate, there is a lot of complexity here, finishing long with a du... Geoffrey Binder. A Syrah wine from California in USA. 2009 Melville Syrah Estate Verna's 750ml

Winery Notes - "This is 100% Melville estate fruit from our ranch in Los Alamos and is composed of seven different clones: (Estrella, Shiraz 1, Tablas 99, 174, 383, 470 and 877). Yields were 3.7 lbs/vine (5.8 tons/acre) in our tightly spaced vineyard. 80% of the grapes were gently de-stemmed, with 20% remaining as whole-cluster, and fermented in small 1.5 ton open-top fermenters. Total skin and stem contact averaged 30 days (a 7 day cold soak, 2+ weeks fermentation and 1+ week extended maceration.) From the press, the wine was transferred directly into neutral (8 to 12 year old French oak barrels) where it remained sur lie with no SO2 until May, when it was gently pressure-racked for the first time and prepared for bottling in August. Tasting Notes: There is a healthy collection of black and blue fruit aromatics reminiscent of plum, boysenberry poptart, black currants, blueberry and black cherry. Other dark nuances of iodine, figs, chicory and soy are juxtaposed against more delicate scents of violets, white tuberose, dried rose, sage, thyme, fennel seed and Kalamata olives. The palate further expands these varied nuances while also a hint of sea salt pushes through. There is density and plushness on the palate while finishing with strength and acidity. 2008 Vintage, 95 Points "The compelling 2008 Syrah Verna's Vineyard Estate reveals lots of northern Rhone-like bacon fat and meaty characteristics interwoven with garrigue, sweet blackberry, and jus de viande notes. The super-complex aromatics are followed by full-bodied flavors. There is not a hard edge to be found in this both intellectually and hedonistically satisfying wine. It should drink nicely for 5-7 years." Wine Advocate, # 190, Aug 2010, Robert Parker
