Melville Pinot Noir Santa Rita Hills Terraces Small Lot Collection 2003
From the west side of our estate, Terraces lies completely exposed to the elements facing brutal winds with aspects facing south-west, west and north. Planted on clay loam and limestone soils, three sections rise up wrapping 120° around the Carrie’s block. Five clones: Swan, Mount Eden, 115, 667 and 777 form a unique combination of old and new clones. This site’s soils, elevation, exposition and clonal diversity run thematically through this wine providing low and high-toned nuances. 0% stem inclusion. Yields at 1 lb/plant. Total skin and stem contact averaged 30 days (7 day cold soak, 2+ weeks of fermentation and 1+ week extended maceration.) From the press, the wine was hand-bucketed 2 gallons at a time directly into barrel (30% new French oak: Sirugue, Marsannay and Mercurey), where it remained sur lie with no sulfur until the waning moon cycle of June, when it was gently pressure-racked for the first time and prepared for bottling in December. 14.5% alcohol.
