What to Expect

Syrah: One of the few grapes to really be a global success. Syrah combines a meaty core of ripe berry fruit with tones that range from herbal to peppery in a package that tends to be medium bodied with good acidity and softer tannins. With age the wines can gain lovely leathery and black olive notes that make them a great match for savory and gamy dishes.

Winemakers Notes

Vintage: Grapes for this wine are entirely from Melville's two estates and are a combination
of eight separate clones (Estrella, Durell, Shenandoah, Shiraz 1, 99, 174, 383 and 877) from
our Santa Rita Hills (48%) and Verna's (52%) vineyards. Yields averaged 3 lbs. per plant in
our tightly spaced vineyard. 67% of the grapes were gently de-stemmed, with 33%
remaining as whole-clusters, and fermented in small 1.5 ton open-top fermenters. Total skin
and stem contact averaged 30 days (a 7 day cold soak, 2+ weeks fermentation and 1+ week
extended maceration.) read more...

Reviews

IWC 89 (8/2005): Bright red-ruby. Musky aromas of plum, pepper and game, with some sweet oak showing. Fat, sweet and fruity, with dark raspberryflavor complemented by smoked meat. Offers pinot-like fruit but finishes with more tannic grip and less sweetness from the oak.

The deep ruby-colored 2003 Syrah Estate possesses more of a Pinot Noir sensibility than most of its peers. Revealing a feminine style with hints of sweet black currants, ripe cherries, and flowers in a medium-bodied, velvety-textured, complex, ethereal format, it is a distinctive California Syrah to enjoy over the next 4-5 years. -Wine Advocate
