Melville Chardonnay Estate Sta. Rita Hills 2012

Winemaker's Notes:

Soft gold in color with bright aromatics of orange zest, honeydew melon, dried stone fruits and lemon verbena. Oily and concentrated on the palate, impressions of grilled lime, agave nectar, hazelnut and kiwi peel intermingle with notes of oyster liquor, sea salt, and dried nori. The mouthfeel is firm and polished finishing with focus and precision. Not yet reviewed; 2011 vintage rated 91 points by both Wine Advocate and International Wine Cellar, which wrote: Bright yellow-gold. Musky pit fruits on the nose, brightened by subtle anise and floral scents. Chewy, faintly bitter orange pith, peach and tarragon flavors are broad and deep but are brightened by a dusty mineral nuance. Finishes with very good breadth and a lingering note of bitter herbs.

Melon, caramel nose suggests heavy oaking and full ML. On the tongue, I initially get the melon and caramel thing, but, then, a delightfully refreshing hit of lemon/grapefruit acid. Lingering pleasant aftertaste. While I feared this would be an overblown California Chardonnay, I find that this one is more like a white Burgundy.

Pale gold. Powerful scents of tangerine pear skin and iodine with a racy streak of smoky minerals adding vivacity. Pure focused and linear on the palate offering fresh lemon orange and orchard fruit flavors and a musky floral quality. Very deep but refreshingly brisk with a penetrating note of dusty minerals on the long focused finish. Stephen Tanzers IWC.
