Wine Skinny

Pruney, almost Port-like, but really interesting for its dense mouthfeel, dried fruit character, cigar box and mineral notes, and complex finish. A Bordeaux varietal blend. Ready to drink now.

Over a quarter of a century ago, this was one of the first South African Bordeaux blends. It is still one of the best, a ripely tannic, firm wine that owes a lot to the structure given by ripe grapes from mature vines. Great acidity, great black currant fruits, and great style. Dark maroon core with touches of brick on the rim and fine sediment in the glass. Dark aromas of wet earth, forest, black truffles and smoky leather surround ripe cassis and black cherry fruits. Very good acidity in the mouth. The earthy rich tobacco... Mike Supple. A wine from in South Africa. 2001 Meerlust Rubicon 750ml

Number 45 on the Wine.com 100 of 2007! A classic blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, this wine is the culmination of the Myburgh family's dream of making a truly remarkable Bordeaux-style wine. Meerlust Rubicon is well-balanced with a cigar box and spicy tobacco bouquet. Smooth, firm tannins provide structure and depth with excellent aging potential. Ultra dark, intense, opaque & concentrated. Very youthful with cerise rim. Exuberant cassis fruit on the nose, black cherry, blackcurrant & nettle-bush followed by cigar box. Full bodied with a concentrated read more...
