Light red. Elegant, understated red berry and cherry aromas, with light notes of pepper and anise. Offers suave, silky raspberry and wild strawberry flavors on a light frame, with no excess weight and very gnetle tannins. This is drinking well now, with sneaky concentration to the red fruit flavors. I really like the finesse and balance here.
Lithe, open-textured and appealing for its spicy red berry and red currant flavors, lingering on the silky finish. Drink now through 2013.
Kevin Mitchell, who has a knack for working with many different varietals, has mastered the fickle Grenache grape as evidenced by the 2003 Grenache Prodigal, a 100% Grenache from 46- to 60-year-old vineyards that was aged two years in old French and American wood prior to being bottled unfiltered. It boasts fabulous Grenache characteristics of melted licorice intermixed with pepper, kirsch liqueur, and raspberries. This rich, full-bodied, opulent offering tastes like a Pinot Noir on steroids. Drink it over the next 4ndash;5 years.
The 2005 Grenache ldquo;Prodigalrdquo; was sourced from vineyards with 48- and 68-year-old Grenache bush vines and aged for 24 months in older oak. Medium ruby-colored, it offers an exotic perfume of mineral, damp earth, kirsch, wild raspberry, and licorice. Velvety-textured, deep, and long, it will drink well over the next 8ndash;10 years.
The 2004 Grenache Prodigal possesses a dark ruby color as well as classic kirsch and licorice notes with a background resiny/earthy character. Full-bodied, supple, and deep, this mouthfilling wine should be drunk over the next 5ndash;6 years.
The 2002 Grenache Prodigal comes from dry farmed Grenache vines averaging 45ndash;65 years of age. There are 1,000 cases of this splendid effort, which Kevin Mitchell told me was the ldquo;best I have made.rdquo; Sweet kirsch liqueur aromas intertwined with hints of raspberries, dusty loamy soil, licorice, and pepper jump from this rich, full-bodied, expansively flavored, pure, authentic Grenache. It possesses a beautiful mouthfeel as well as a long, heady finish. Drink it over the next decade.
