McGrail Vineyards is a family owned winery specializing in Cabernet Sauvignon. On the hilltop of Greenville Road the vineyard enjoys the morning fog and afternoon sun. The winery is a vineyard driven operation that considers itself a foremost proponet of the potential of the Livermore Valley. The vineyard is managed with sustainability and quality in mind. Discovering McGrail Vineyards tasting room is to uncover a unique winery where the passion to craft the finest Cabernet Sauvignon is equal to creating an unforgettable experience where outstanding customer service is a must. The McGrail family is warm, passionate, and down-to earth. They strive to take the "snobiness" out of wine tasting. Intimidation is unheard of and the tasting room feels a bit like home. The McGrail's invite you to taste their small lot wines, picnic, explore the vineyard, and enjoy the panoramic views from their hilltop tasting room. Jim and Ginger McGrail, planted the Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard in 1999 and originally sold all fruit to Steven Kent Winery. In 2003, the McGrail family along with the help of Rhonda Wood made a barrel to enjoy with friends and family. The following vintage one barrel turned into five, and by 2005 the McGrail's were starting production on 1,000 cases of wine. By the end of 2005, the McGrail's decided they were going to go into the production side of the wine business and decided to start planning for a winery. After almost three years, Jim, Ginger, and their daughter Heather, finished the estate tasting room and winery on the property of the vineyard. The McGrail Vineyards and Winery is a 16 acre hillside Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard in the Livermore Valley. This rolling vineyard is at approximately 1,000 feet above sea level. The vineyard was planted in 1999 on 5BB rootstalk with Clone 8 and 15 Cabernet Sauvignon. The vines are spaced at 5’ x 7’ and planted in a VSP, vertical shooting positioning. Read less

It's amazing how smooth this wine is for a higher alcohol wine. At 15% alcohol this wine still manages to balance nicely with the tannins and overall character. The dark cherry and blackberry that come forward on the nose are just the start for this delicious wine.

The nose is filled with dark cherries, toasty oak, ripe cassis, and a hint of chocolate all combining to form an intricate and powerful aroma. In the mouth, the 2005 Cabernet is silky yet bold. The tannins are slightly more noticeable than the 2004 year, but still very balanced. This complex wine has a long finish leaving fresh berries lingering on your tongue. Very drinkable right now, but save a bottle or two and age it for 2-3 years.
