It’s taken twenty-five harvests and lots of passion for a dream to come true: to produce a great red and bring Burgundy to Oltrepò Pavese. The dream was Sandra’s, who has been running the Braggiotti family’s estate since 1993. In this “borderland” wedged between Emilia and Piedmont, south of the River Po, the Braggiottis’ successful intuition has managed to capture the potential s of a vine, the pinot noir, which has a centuries-old connection with these gentle hills. The first person to suggest that they make reds out of pinot noir was a great father of Italian wine: Giacomo Bologna. The Noir first came to light in 1984, twenty-five years ago… Sandra Braggiotti, a graduate in business and economics from the Bocconi University in Milan, preferred rows of vines to the tables of high finance, and in 1993 began to devote herself to the Mazzolino vines. She was the one who decided to replant the existing pinot noir vines in rotation with cuttings from Guillaume’s, the most famous nursery in Burgundy. But this prize celebrates another anniversary in addition to the twenty-five years of the “Noir”: their ten years’ work alongside one of the greatest experts in Burgundy, oenologist Kyriakos Kynigopoulos, who started out as a consultant in 1999 with Jean-François Coquard, a fellow graduate from the University of Dijon. Following the French example, the two oenologists restyled the main phases in the wine-making process using modern methods, insisting on lengthy periods of maceration and using the best woods for a refinement phase in small barrels. The result is a great red, with an international taste, but firmly rooted in the Oltrepò territory. A challenge for which Sandra Braggiotti finds her just reward in this prize, a well-earned endorsement of all the hard work in the vineyards, cellars and on the wine’s reputation. “I’m very happy,” Sandra Braggiotti declares. “We’ve been waiting for this coveted prize for some time now and it has come this year, almost as if to say the choices we made many years ago, when we were perhaps the first in this area to believe that the pinot noir clone could become ‘that’ great red, were right. I’d like to share this achievement with my closest team members and all those who believed in our dream and the Noir.” Read less
