He authored the first known document referencing the designation, a commercial contract bearing his signature in 1398. Another  future Mazzei family member helped Thomas Jefferson plant his vineyards in Virginia. Through marriage  of a daughter, the Mazzei family came to acquire the Fonterutoli estate The winery today has 5 different terroirs.which includes 41 grape clones with 36 being Sangiovese. The vineyards are Le Ripe Vineyard, Fonterutoli Vineyard, Belvedere  Vineyards, Siepi Ineyard, and Caggio Vineyard. Read less
