Maysara Pinot Noir Jamsheed Mcminnville Ava 2006

Winemaker's Notes:

"Light and fragrant, with pretty floralovertones to the cherry and roasted meat flavors, lingering softly onthe seamless finish. Drink now through 2014. 3,000 cases made. HS"90 pointsThe Wine Spectator, December 15th, 2008"The entry level 2006 Pinot Noir Jamsheed is dark ruby-colored, andoffers up a pleasant aroma of spice box and black fruits in astraightforward style. It is an easygoing wine for drinking over thenext several years. Maysara Winery began in 1997 when MoMomtazi purchased his McMinnville vineyard. There are now 225 acresplanted and certified biodynamic. The winerys first vintage was 2001.Currently 8000 cases are produced with Mos daughter, Tahmiene, servingas winemaker."Jay Miller, The Wine Advocate #179, Oct. 2008"According to ancient Persian legend, King Jamsheed was able to observe his entire realm by peering into his full wine goblet. We thought this a fitting name for a wine that blends grapes from every block of our vineyard. Sourced from Dijon and Pommard vines planted on a variety of soil types and at different elevations, Jamsheed is a glimpse into our realm.Color and complexity have never been a problem at Momtazi Vineyard and the 2006 vintage was no exception. The medium aubergine color of the 2006 Jamsheed Pinot noir makes a statement before one even picks up the glass. On first approach, it yields dark aromas of plums, black currents, Rainer cherries and spicy currants. Balanced acidity coupled with fine-grained, soft tannins keep the fruit lingering in ones mouth couples with a long soothing finish. This is a wine thats ready now and will only continue to improve."Winery Notes

Disappointing given the SW rating and price (paid $20). Nose was somewhat promising, some raspberry fruit, but color was a bit off/dull/dark for a PN. Wine came off as unbalanced, a little hot, some slightly medicinal sour cherry fruit. Not the vivacious pinot noir I was hoping for.

This rather luscious Pinot Noir from McMinnville, Oregon is a great example of the fruit-forward style of American Pinot Noir that so many have grown to love. On the nose, the wine gives plenty of floral berry character. Though heavy on the jammy fruit, the palate is balanced and soft, and supple tannins round out the equation.
