Mayard Chateauneuf du Pape la Crau de Ma Mere 2015

External Review:

Vivid ruby. Sexy, floral aromas of cherry and black raspberry, with slow-building smokiness. Deep, powerful red fruit compote flavors provide very good palate coverage, with supple tannins providing shape. Gains ripeness with air and finishes smooth and long, with notes of cherry compote and candied plum.

Showing some similarities to the ’13 (which is a testament to the quality of her 2013s), the 2012 Châteauneuf du Pape La Crau de Ma Mere (60% Grenache, 30% Mourvedre and 10% Syrah) has lots of sweet blackberry, incense, spice and red flower-like aromatics. Medium to full-bodied, ripe, textured, with an expansive, layered mouth feel and sweet tannin, it’s a fabulous drink that will continue to evolve gracefully through 2024.

A Provencal fruit bomb, the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape La Crau de Ma Mere exhibits lots of cedar, spice box, charcuterie, Provencal herb, kirsch, lavender and pepper characteristics. It is a spicy, big, full-bodied, rich wine with silky tannins, decent acidity, and a layered mouthfeel as well as an authoritative finish. Drink it over the next 10–15 years.

Bright ruby. A complex, deeply pitched bouquet displays scents of cherry compote, cassis and Indian spices, with a hint of lavender gaining strength with air. Juicy, floral and focused on the palate, with intense dark fruit flavors lifted by tangy acidity. The sweet finish features very good floral-driven persistence.

Ruby-red. Vibrant, mineral-driven aromas of red and dark berries, spicecake, anise and rose. Sweet raspberry and blackberry flavors are framed by silky tannins and become spicier with aeration. A juicy, pure wine with alluring sweetness and floral notes on the long, sappy, penetrating finish.

The finest, most concentrated, and potentially long-lived of this group is the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape La Crau de Ma Mere. This beauty exhibits a deep ruby/purple color along with ripe black raspberry, blackberry, and kirsch fruit interwoven with notions of camphor, incense, licorice, and graphite. It possesses full-bodied, powerful flavors, high glycerin, silky tannin, and good acids that give the wine a vibrancy as well as laser-like precision. This big Chateauneuf du Pape has the potential to be the finest yet made by the Mayard family. Although drinkable now, it promises to be even better in 2-3 years, and last for 15 or more.
