The nose showed dusty black cherries, blueberry and citrus rind with wild herbs and savory meaty notes. On the palate, I found blackberry fruit and spice with violet candies and bitters. This wine showed great structure and wonderful balance as it was bitter, then sweet and acidic, then rich on the palate. The alcohol showed slightly on the long finish but still showed enough fruit and structure to forgive it.

Bright red. Highly aromatic bouquet of raspberry, cherry-cola, dried rose and allspice. Fresh, suave and pinot-like, with excellent precision to its red berry and spice flavors. The clear finish features lingering sweetness.

Composed of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Cinsault aged in cement tanks, the dense ruby/purple-tinged 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Clos du Calvaire exhibits knock-out, explosive aromas of jammy red and black fruits intermixed with truffles, Provencal herbs, licorice and barbecue smoke. This deep, rich, full-bodied effort is one of the most voluptuously-textured, concentrated wines I have tasted from Francoise Mayard. It should drink well for 10–12 years.

Rhone, FranceMayard Chateauneuf-du-Pape Clos du Calvaire is a beautiful example of this complex red blend from the Rhone. Named for the village just north of Avignon, Chateauneuf-du-Pape (new castle of the Pope) is the place where Pope John XXII first built a summer residence and planted vineyards back in the 14th century. Vignobles Mayard is a 5th-generation estate run by Franoise Roumieux, along with her sister Batrice, and brother Didier. Their family estate is comprised of 40 separate parcels scattered throughout the appellation. The largest pieces are located in the south of the appellation and the northeastern sub-zone of La Crau. Robert Parker rated this red wine gem from the stunning 2009 vintage 90-93 points!Mayard Chateauneuf-du-Pape Clos du Calvaire is dark ruby red in color with a complex bouquet of raspberries, cassis, vanilla, spice, and violets. Full-bodied with moderate acidity and soft tannins, this red offers flavors of jammy red fruit, vanilla, garrigue, and hints of truffles. The blend is 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Cinsault from 40- to 50-year-old vines, aged in neutral oak foudres and cement tanks. It is beautifully balanced with a rich, perfumed finish.Enjoy Mayard Chateauneuf-du-Pape Clos du Calvaire over the next 10-12 years with daube Provencal (slow-cooked beef), roast chicken, grilled mushrooms, pastas, and cheeses.

Deep ruby. Raspberry, dried cherry, licorice and peppery spices on the nose. Dense and nicely concentrated, with nervy acidity giving spine and focus to the musky red fruit, licorice and rose flavors. On the powerful side, finishing with very good clarity and medicinal cherry and herb nuances.

Enormous aromas of ground pepper, Asian spices, roasted Provencal herbs, black cherries, and black currants jump from the glass of the dark ruby/purple-tinged 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Clos du Calvaire. Full-bodied, sexy, lush, and opulent, with enormous upfront appeal as well as good substance and depth, it should age nicely for a decade or more. All of these wines are produced under the family umbrella of the Mayard family.
