Mayacamas Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Mt. Veeder Napa Mountain 1975

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

From pristine mag. This opened with intense bottle stink that blew of slowly revealing notes of sweet licorice, wood ash, a touch of shoe polish, slate, cigar ash, leather, black olive and black berry. this was much like the 73 with some additional intensity and ripeness and as that bottle recalled Graves this reminded more of St. Julien/ Pauillac. This was both more youthful and brighter in the mouth with very fine tannins defining the typically muscular mountain fruit. A bit lighter in body than the 73 offering a more elegant and refined palate presence that delivered layers of earthy, black fruits and nuanced notes of herb and cigar box. Really very precise and fresh. fantastic bottle and I only prefer the 73 for it's slightly more rustic, faceted mouthfeel.

Mayacamas Vineyards is a wine estate located in the Mayacamas Mountains that divide the Napa and Sonoma Valleys. The old stone winery is perched on the edge of a dormant volcano crater near the top of Mt. Veeder. Fifty two acres of vineyards are planted on mountain sides ranging from 1,800 to 2,400 feet above sea level. Deer, eagles, coyotes, cougars, foxes, bobcats, and an occasional bear still inhabit this rugged terrain. The winery was built in 1889 by John Henry Fisher, a German immigrant, who first worked as a sword engraver in Philadelphia and then became a pickle merchant in San Francisco. The winery was also used by his family as a summer home and as a ranch to raise and care for the horses he used to deliver pickles to his clients in San Francisco. He sold his wine by the barrel. The barrels were loaded onto horse drawn wagons, driven fifteen miles to the Napa River, and then transferred to ferry boats which took the wine to San Francisco where it was bottled and sold At Mayacamas Vineyards our objective is to make wine with as much flavor, complexity and character as grapes can deliver. Given proper care and enough time, we believe these make the most interesting and enjoyable wines of all. Read less

Bloody on the nose with a bit of poop and a rusty, mineral tone. This is dominated by its acidity in the mouth though there remains a huge amount of fruit to help buffer the acids though overall it has a slightly rustic feel to it. It’s rich and gutsy with ripe red fruits and a mineral vein that leads to a fraying finale with a nice note of lingering cranberry fruit. Drink em up. 91pts

CLONYC #8 - 1970s Cabs at Zoe ('74-'76Martini/'73&'74Mayacamas/'77Heitz Bella Oaks) :From an impeccable pristine magnum. This wine in itself was worth the price of admission for the night. Dark brooding color. Silky dark fruited and jam packed full of character. This had a wonderful fully resolved tannin level acted like a conveyor for all else. Some soy, cedar box, tobacco, & cassis. This wine needed a night to watch. Youthful and vibrant still. A long finish completed a very impressive experience indeed. 96/100
