For those of you familiar with our Reserve Zinfandel, you understand what I mean when I say, “We take Zinfandel and make it like Cabernet”. The 2006 Grower’s Reserve optimizes that statement. Extended maceration, more than 2 years in French oak, hillside vineyards… sounds like a recipe for a great Cabernet, or in our case, a Zinfandel.

With over 270 acres of estate vineyards and close relationships with longtime growers throughout Sonoma County, we are able to source and manage our favorite blocks from each vineyard throughout the growing season and select the most premium fruit during harvest.Each vineyard and appellation we source from carry particular qualities in either the terroir or the farming style that we look for when considering a Mauritson wine release. Six generations of farming has taught us a few things about choosing premium fruit! Each harvest, the best from our 230 acres throughout the Dry Creek and Alexander Valleys is reserved for our Estate Wines. These wines, which include our signature Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon, showcase the fruit-forward, floral and spice-driven characteristics attributed to these appellations. Winemaking may have been the logical evolution in our family’s long history of farming in the Dry Creek Valley, however, it took an absence from the valley and attention to those inner voices that led Clay Mauritson back to these same vineyards that he spent planting, tending and picking as a teen. What he came to realize was that he already had a lifetime of understanding about the subtleties and strengths of each micro-climate within the Dry Creek, Rockpile and Alexander Valleys. Tasting Notes:

The aromas of berry, earth, and the hints of oak are just a tease. Rich and firm in the front palate, yet restrained and elegant on the finish, this wine is the Jekyll and Hyde of Zinfandels. It retains all of the wonderful traits that make Zinfandel so spectacular: black fruit, minerals, spice… and… combines that with the best that Cabernet has to offer, broad tannins, complex fruit, and incredible aging ability. Take pleasure in the beautiful dichotomy of this wine. Drink it now or sometime in the next decade.
