Mauritson Wines Zinfandel Dry Creek Valley 2011

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

5% petite, 40% Rockpile fruit Black cherry and a little beefy on the nose with dusty and soil driven basenotes that show a little briar wood and a hint of smoked paprika. Very fresh and easy drinking in style with soft tannins and well integrated acids supporting juicy blackberry and black cherry fruits. The tannins are a little raw today, adding a bit of chewiness to the coca tinged finish but this is really fresh and fruit filled so give it three to six months to settle down. 88pts

With over 270 acres of estate vineyards and close relationships with longtime growers throughout Sonoma County, we are able to source and manage our favorite blocks from each vineyard throughout the growing season and select the most premium fruit during harvest. Each vineyard and appellation we source from carry particular qualities in either the terroir or the farming style that we look for when considering a Mauritson wine release. Six generations of farming has taught us a few things about choosing premium fruit! Each harvest, the best from our 230 acres throughout the Dry Creek and Alexander Valleys is reserved for our Estate Wines. These wines, which include our signature Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon, showcase the fruit-forward, floral and spice-driven characteristics attributed to these appellations. Winemaking may have been the logical evolution in our family’s long history of farming in the Dry Creek Valley, however, it took an absence from the valley and attention to those inner voices that led Clay Mauritson back to these same vineyards that he spent planting, tending and picking as a teen. What he came to realize was that he already had a lifetime of understanding about the subtleties and strengths of each micro-climate within the Dry Creek, Rockpile and Alexander Valleys. Floral and juicy on the nose, with the unfettered aromas of crushed berry fruit and fresh herbs. I love this purity, with clear-as-a-bell notes of raspberry, earth and light herb all presented in a juicy, plump yet medium-scaled wine that is so soft and pure. This does turn a little tannic on the finish, which shows a hint of soil-driven astringency, but it remains so precise and fresh it’s irresistible. 90 points

Quite dark color. Very full nose--blackberry, wood. Very fun on the palate. I don't really get the jamminess that a lot of Zins have, but there is certainly significant berry fruit. However, this is supported by firm tannins and nice acid. US$23.20 at the winery in Healdsburg

Big berry-filled nose—also, some earthiness. Quite pleasant on entry to the mouth—some blackberry flavor but not as big as aroma suggested. A little resinous wood. Some dusty earth. Not the most full-bodied Zin I’ve ever had, but an easy drinker.

The Mauritson Family has a farming history dating back to the 1860s, with such a rich and storied past, they produce some of the finest Zinfandel in Sonoma County. Big, deep and layered, this Zinfandel is impressive for its density and length.
