Mauritson Syrah Madrone Spring Vineyard 2006
Dark purple color almost matches dark brooding, earthy nose. Subtle blackberry flavor on the tongue. Then a saline sensation. Flavor of cedar on the back of the tongue/palate. Firm, not overwhelming tannin and acid. Probably ageable for the next decade.Add winemaker's notes

Initial tartness on the tip of the tongue surprises me a bit. That diminishes quickly, and is followed by a somewhat gamey sensation. Another surprise is sweetness that pops up towards the back of the tongue/palate. Fairly full-bodied, but not monstrous by any calculation. Nice because it does not blow you away with berry or cherry flavors.
Inky dark in the glass. "Rustic" outdoorsy, "barnyard" aromas. Winner, winner on the palate. Not terribly fruited. Some spiciness (hint of clove), "dusty" flavors. Pretty tannic--good amount of puckeriness. Good acid. US$31.20 at the winery in Healdsbufg.
