I normally meet with Michel Ecard, one of Maurice's sons, but it was Maurice himself who greeted me on my early March visit. In Maurice's view, 2002 is a good vintage with an impeccable cleanliness to the crop. Yields were in the 38 to 40 hl/ha range with sugars that came in between 12.5 and 13% and thus there was very little chaptalization. For me, the vintage seems a lot like 1989 with perhaps a bit more freshness. We bottled a bit earlier than usual to preserve the freshness, which is to say right after the harvest.
