Deep ruby-red. Richer and more powerful on the nose than the Juan Rojo, offering potent aromas of cherry and plum liqueur, with hints of cola and vanilla. Broad, deep, palate-staining dark fruit flavors are framed by chewy tannins and gain a strong licorice note with air. The finish repeats the cherry quality and leaves a smoky note behind.

The 2005 Libranza was sourced from 120-year-old vines and aged for 14 months in French oak. Dark ruby in color, it is a bit more expressive aromatically as well as more concentrated. On the palate, savory, ripe black cherry and blackberry flavors nicely conceal enough ripe tannin to support 5andndash;7 years of additional cellaring. It will offer prime drinking from 2014 to 2025.

The 2004 Libranza spent 14 months in French and American oak. Inky purple-hued, it has a complex bouquet of smoke, cedar, tar, pencil lead, espresso, and blackberry. This is followed by a plush, full-bodied, intense wine in which spice notes and licorice emerge. It conceals enough tannin to evolve for 5-7 years and should drink well through 2035.

Inky violet. Explosive dark berry, floral, tobacco and mineral aromas display striking clarity and pungency. Deep, velvety and sweet, offering deep blackberry and blackcurrant liqueur flavors, a suggestion of spicy licorice and suave tannic support. Impressively vibrant on the long, juicy finish. The vines here are reportedly over 100 years old and the yield is less than a half-pound of grapes per vine.
