What to Expect

California has long struggled with Pinot Noir. Finding the right vineyards for this most fickle of grape, one that enjoys a cool growing season yet needs warmth close to harvest to fully ripen, has proven a challenge in such a sunny state. Cooler areas eventually became identified; the Santa Rita Hills, Russian River Valley and Mendocino's Anderson valley are all prime spots for Pinot Noir in California. Unlike the lighter colored and sometimes delicate Pinots of Burgundy, California produces many rich, deep Pinots full of slightly chewy dark berry and cherry fruits with hints of cola, Asian spices and forest floor frequently adding complexity.

Winemakers Notes

This release is just the second vintage of pinot noir since the late 1970's. Our cool climate home in Bennett Valley provides ideal growing conditions for this fickle grape. This wine proves vibrant on the palate, with flavors of cranberry, pomegranate and hint of smoke, which we believe emanates from the Bennett valley subsoil.

The wine's structure will allow for it to be reserved for the next three to five years. With time, this Pinot Noir will become more velvety and sophisticated and the minerality will become more pronounced.

Editorial Reviews

Dark tootsie roll, earth and herb scented fruit greets the nose and slowly opens to reveal a tight, menthol inflected core of baked black cherry fruit. On the palate this has a silky, open feel to it with integrated acids and ripe tannin only obvious on the edges. The fruit is fresh and deep with a slight medicinal tone that yields to the fruit on the backend. I rather like this though it is subtle; it is eminently drinkable and has a sneaky low intensity complexity that grabs your interest. The finish is quite strong with a wonderful herbal/stemmy character floating over the candied raspberry fruit. 92pts

Reviews

Very nice wine and one that I think will approve with age. Came across as a cross between a Carneros and Russian River Valley Pinot. Red cherry with a hint of caramel in the nose. Strawberry and cherry flavors with good acid.

A little gamey on the nose. Big soft pinot fruit with lots of complexity and and relaxed finish.

Super light cherry and cinnamon nose. Nice fresh cherry flavors with a good fresh lively acidity and a bit of tartness leading into a creamy finish with a touch of cola.
