The vision The dream of owning a winery capable of producing world-class wine was nurtured in London and Tokyo, and translated into the reality of Matahiwi Estate in the late 1990s. Wellington-raised, former investment banker Alastair Scott had always fancied a wine cellar. Sampling a range of wines styles while working in London sparked interest further at a time when Kiwi Sauvignon Blanc was first making international waves. Any potential vineyard venture had to make sound economic sense so the Pinot Noir aficionado "parked the idea" for several years and finally left Tokyo in 1997 to put the foundations in place. Alastair returned to Wellington and planted vines on a former dairy farm at Opaki, north of Masterton, in the neighbouring Wairarapa. He brought his grape-growing plan forward five years after winemaker Jane Cooper spontaneously knocked on his door in 2002 to ask when he planned to build his winery. At that time he had not yet picked any fruit, but she had done her homework on local viticutural conditions and the partnership was sealed. Alastair built the winery over 2003 for the 2004 vintage and the first bottle of Matahiwi Estate Pinot Noir 2004 was sold in London to wine retailer Oddbins at a New Zealand Winegrowers trade show in 2005. He had always planned to focus on the export market and today Matahiwi Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc sit proudly on shelves and wine lists in the UK, Japan, Australia, Holland and Canada, with small quantities also in Hong Kong and Vietnam. The convivality of sharing wine with family and friends is not overlooked. Alastair's three children, Ben, Joe and Holly, play a part in vineyard activities, and Holly could become a household name - through Matahiwi's flagship Holly label, made only in exceptional years.
