Mastroberardino Taurasi Radici Riserva 2001

Winemaker's Notes:

In the two thousand year history of the Aglianico grape, Taurasi, the wine of the ‘vigne opime’ of old Taurasia mentioned by Livy, has a special place. This wine has seen an astonishing series of vintages which have charmed with their style and personality. Radici, which was produced for the first time in 1986, is the result of painstaking research into exposure, chemical and physical characteristics of terroir, and topography. Its strong personality, dense structure, and aromatic concentration are the primary features of this prestigious symbol of Irpinian viticulture

This superb Riserva Taurasi has been conceived for celebrating 130 years since the official registration of the winery at the Chamber of Commerce in Avellino. In 1878, Angelo Mastroberardino, Cavaliere dell’Ordine della Corona d’Italia and great-grandfather of the current President, Professor Piero Mastroberardino, registered the company, in order to export wines in Europe and America. Since then, the Mastroberardino’s has always safeguarded and spread the great values of the wine from Irpinia: Taurasi has been the main flagship of this fascinating entrepreneurial story, as testified by the collection of about a century of vintages, jealously kept in the family‘s caveau, an extraordinary evidence of the local viticulture in the world. Aglianico finds its best expression in this land, raising the highest consideration as one of the main vines of the world, for character, longevity and elegance. This exclusive production of Riserva Taurasi is from vintage 1999, one of the most interesting vintages in the last decades. The label of Taurasi Riserva Centotrenta shows the faces of the three exponents that have marked the history of these 130 years, with their professional and human contribution: Angelo MastroberardinoAngelo Mastroberardino (1850-1914), the founder of the winery’s modern era, in 1878 registered the company in the Register of Enterprises and started to export wines, by founding a logistic company in Rome; Michele MastroberardinoMichele Mastroberardino (1886-1945), the pioneer, who brought Mastroberardino wines in the world, with courage and stubbornness, by continuously travelling world wide in the first half of 1900’s; Antonio Mastroberardino, Cavaliere del Lavoro, considered the archaeologist of vines and wine, has played a crucial role since the 1950’s by safeguarding native grapes,Antonio Mastroberardino even in the darkest and difficult years, contributing with scientific knowledge to the development of local and Italian viticulture and economy. Dark purple in the glass, dark and heavy. On the nose the wine is all Taurasi with licorice, cherries and meat on the nose, a smoky barbeque style wine infact. On the palate the wine is full bodied and smooth and the fills every inch of your mouth, a real palate coating wine. Good length on the finish I suspect a few more years will do it some favours
