Flower scented, earthy, berry-like nose. Soft in the mouth, low in acidity, spicy and appealing with violet, fennel, cherry-berry-currant flavors. It's a satisfying, meaty red that at first sip reminded me of a fresh Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, but the fleshy personality really comes out with food.

Firm, focused and stylish, with a nice spicy edge to the basic currant and ripe plum flavor. Hints of prune emerge on the finish. Drinkable now through 1995.

A dark crimson wine that is rich and particularly velvety. It exhibits a full nose, flavors of berries, cherries and plums with hints of spice, and rounded tannins. This wine is a great complement to hearty pasta dishes and grilled meats.

Delicious young wine. Aromas of plums, earth and spice follow through to a medium-bodied palate, with fine tannins and a short finish. Needs a bit more fruit on the midpalate. Drink now through 2002.

A tightly packed, sly wine that requires a good 30 minutes before it really begins showing all its stuff. One of the biggies of the Campania region near Naples. Medium-bodied, with drying tannins and good acidity, it's a fantastic food wine made entirely from Piedirosso. Hugely fruity, with a great edge to it. Licorice and friendly oak on the finish.

Big, juicy and chewy red. Dark ruby color, with loads of spicy black pepper character. Full-bodied, with lots of fruit and chewy tannins. Long finish. Give this one time. Best after 2001.

Winemaker's Notes:

The name of this wine is rooted in biblical history. According to the legend, God cried when he found a corner of Heaven stolen by Lucifer: where his tears fell, there grew the grapes that make Lacryma Christi, translated as 'tears of Christ.' Made from 100% Piedirosso grapes grown in volcanic soil near Mount Vesuvius and fermented in stainless steel, this is a unique red wine-- youthful, but substantial.
