Mastroberardino Aglianico Irpinia 2007
To call Mastroberardino a leading Campanian producer is to do it an injustice, for the Campanian wine industry as we know it would not exist without Mastroberardino. For over two hundred years, it has championed local specialities, and has thus been instrumental in preserving Taurasi, Greco di Tufo, Fiano di Avellino and their ilk into the twenty-first century. This 100% Aglianico wine is an intense ruby red colour. It has a Cabernet style nose of blackberry and toasted oak. On the palate it is soft and elegant with red fruits and jam-like qualities.
Full of bursting overtones of cherry, raspberry and fine 80% dark chocolate. Be astonished by this very smooth, integrated 2007 with a distinctive taste that one can only attribute to the wholesome trace minerals that come from the volcanic soils in this region. Translates right through into the glass. The smoothness of fine and sublime is well blended in this very dark red. More on the dry side. Absolutely no sulfide/chemically after-taste or effects. Overall, a very presentable, delicious wine as a gift representing Italy's cultural gourmet bounty.
