Massolino Barolo Parafada 2010

Winemaker's Notes:

"Powerfully structured yet surprisingly graceful, this is one of the stars of the vintage. It seamlessly weaves together tobacco, underbrush, leather and intense balsamic sensations with succulent black cherry, raspberry and licorice flavors. Very compact, calcareous soil, 70 year old vines, Smoky and briary on the nose which is rich with aromas of black fruit, and jumps around in the glass revealing sweet dried strawberry and rhubarb aromas, hints of incense, pipe tobacco, and stemmy herb notes. Deep, transparent and elegant on the palate this is holding back a lot in reserve with a palate that is mineraly today with finely delineated fruit. Crystal clear on the palate with ripe, powerful tannins, great purity to the fruit, great length, long extracty finish with minerality that emerges on the palate and drives the finish like a laser. This is austere and rigid today but with great potential. 94pts

The black currant and cherry fruit drapes over the fine-grained texture in this refined red. Balanced and long, with tobacco and mineral elements. There are ample tannins despite the finesse. Best from 2017 through 2032.

Good deep red. Musky aromas of spices, menthol and marzipan are currently blocked by nutty reduction. Big and rich but light on its feet, with red fruit and spice flavors currently in the deep background. This is really brutally closed today and revealing very little. Finishes with serious, youthfully tough tannins. Almost certainly better than it’s showing today, but this is locked up tight. For his part, Massolino predicts that 2010 will be a 40-year vintage for Barolo.

From the Serralunga d’Alba township, the 2010 Barolo Parafada is a powerhouse wine that meets that difficult balance between elegance and sheer muscle. Of Massolino’s new releases, this wine stands apart for its beautifully saturated appearance and the rich plushness of the mouthfeel. This is a gorgeous wine that is not too far off from the start of its drinking window. With just a few more years in the cellar, Parafada has the natural power and structure to pair with succulent cuts of meat. Drink: 2016–2030.

Powerfully structured yet surprisingly graceful, this is one of the stars of the vintage. It seamlessly weaves together tobacco, underbrush, leather and intense balsamic sensations with succulent black cherry, raspberry and licorice flavors. It’s all supported by a backbone of lively acidity and noble tannins. This will age and evolve for decades. Drink 2020–2050.
