Massolino Barolo Margheria 2013

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Planted in 1985 under the winery just north, a little sandier than the others, which lends it a floral, sweet dried floral and tobacco that sets this cru apart Mineral and sweetly spicy on the nose with an almost cinnamon, great Chinese five spice character and tobacco base notes and a faint marine saline accent. Bright and clear on entry this is elegant and full in the mouth with a very traditional feel. A fairly powerful wine, tight with reticent notes of rose petals, plum skin, and red currant fruit in the mouth, leading to a long finish replete with a deep raspberry confiture note, slight vegetal notes and a finale of wild strawberry. Lovely classic expression of Barolo. 93pts

Super fine on the nose with high toned wild strawberries framed with fine spice notes. This shows a gentle sweetness on entry in a style that is  very open and very transparent. There are lovely mineral notes early on the palate followed by pure red fruit with very clean woodsy spice notes and rose hip accents powering the moderately long finish. This is very pretty, and elegant really remarkable clarity on the palate, 93pts

Stewy, wild cherry fruit greets the nose, in a good way, with freshening top notes of herbs and a hint of nutmeg. This is very fresh in the mouth, precise and layered with aromatic wild cherry fruit, earth, herb and that haunting little nutmeg tone. A wine with wonderful balance, elegant and very well done. Fresh tannins with some clay notes on the finish and a finale that shows a hint of espresso foam and strawberry. 92pts

Dark, menthol, earth, licorice, closed, powerful, a hint of powdered sugar. Nice focus, clean and crisp, tight but with nice texture and balance, good feel, dark and powerful but still very simple, embryonic.

AWE blind tasting - lovely liquory fruit, great captured fruit on the nose, with exotic notes of green seeds middle eastern spicy seeds, nice intensity just a touch of medicinal character and a hint of black cherry fruit, a bit sweet up front then falling off but the palate holds it together just enough to maintain interest, a soft styled wine again with lovely pure if simple dark slight cooked raspberry/dried strawberry tones and a little bit of tension from the medicinal character which gains nice purity on the long finish 88-89

This is smoky, with tobacco- and mineral-tinged cherry and strawberry flavors. Quickly gives way to firm, mouthcoating tannins, yet finds equilibrium overall, lingering well. Best from 2019 through 2035.

Underbrush, rose, violet, black cherry, balsamic notes, cinnamon, mint, leather and Mediterranean herbs are just some of the sensations that emerge. The juicy fruit is balanced with energy and velvety tannins. It’s loaded with energy and finesse, and give it time to develop even more complexity. Drink 2020–2040.

Medium bright red. Cool, precise aromas and flavors of raspberry, blueberry and menthol. Sweet, silky and seamless; youthfully closed today but already hints at outstanding depth. Superb energy contributes to the impression of brilliant definition. The very long, juicy finish features noble tannins and a piquant note of orange zest. One for the cellar.

If Parussi is characterized by lingering floral notes, the 2010 Barolo Margheria remains focused on red fruit and shades of exotic fruit. This is a big, bold expression of Nebbiolo with deep structure and velvety, rich tannins. Some 24 months in barrel given the wine bold aromatic intensity with soft tones of red cherry, cassis, leather and tobacco. The wine is only at the humble beginning of its evolutionary course and Barolo Margheria is definitely among Massolino’s most age-worthy expressions. Those tannins need a few more years to soften compared to the Barolo Parussi. Drink: 2018–2033.

The 2007 Barolo Margheria is fabulously ripe and explosive in its dark red fruit, leather, licorice and anise. Medium to full in body, the Margheria possesses superb delineation and nuance to match its elegant personality. It turns exuberant again on the finish, where floral, minty notes add lift and freshness. The 2007 Margheria is a wonderfully complete, regal Barolo from Massolino with a bright future ahead of it. Anticipated maturity: 2015andndash;2027.

Good full red. A bit aromatically compressed on the nose today, with the warm vintage and oak element dominating. Then large-scaled, dense and sweet in the mouth but in a youthfully dumb stage. A big and very long Barolo but a bit aggressive, even tough, today and hard to judge. Iandrsquo;d lay this down for five or six years.

Very Burgundian in style, this red delivers strawberry and cherry flavors, accented by notes of herbs and underbrush. Still a bit stingy on the finish, but the balance is there, so be patient. Best from 2015 through 2029.
