Food Pairings for Massena Shiraz Barossa Valley the Eleventh Hour
$35 purchased direct from winery. Fruit from sixty year old vines in Greenock. Intense black ruby colour. A medium+ youthful fragrance of creme de cassis, Spanish plums, summer florals and a hint of pastis. The colour clings to the glass, leaving a trail of lovely fine legs. A silky texture, this is a dry, full-bodied wine with vibrant acidity and fine grained tannins that are content to sit in the background. Rich, intense blackcurrant flavours with tiger lily-like sweetness. Long satisfying finish, this will keep for a decade. Drink now – 2025. 93+/100.
This is a delightfully smooth and elegant wine of distinct clarity and focus that still manages great grip and zing. Rich, pure dark fruit on the nose and palate, along with fresh ground pepper on both as well, make this wine an immediately pleasing and balanced composition with a wonderful lingering finish. At 30 minutes, dark chocolate, tar, pepper, plum and blueberry intermingle in an evolving bouquet on the nose, as dark fruits, chocolate and pepper light up the palate. At one hour, ground pepper still leads the band on the nose with added notes of pecan and wild flower, even as sweet blackberry and tangy spices, mainly pepper, dominate the palate. At 1.5 hours, coffee, mocha, cherry and blackberry notes make a medley on the palate, with wild flower bouquets wafting across the nose.
Decanted 30 min. prior to first taste. Explosive nose of fruit, cola and tobacco leaf. Very thick, dark as night. This is a joy to smell! First taste is HUGE fruit, alcohol heat, cigarbox, and a touch of tartness and sour cherries on the long finish. Definitely has some heat (label says 14.5% ABV) that hits you on the finish as well. More time in the decanter...After 3+ hours in the decanter, I have another taste. Heat is almost gone, nose now somewhat muted, but the fruit is still all there, as is the tart finish. This is a nice wine, but I'm not as impressed as I was with the 2005 Mitolo GAM. Excellent - 89 points. [Note: Leaving this in the decanter overnight, so may report again when I taste it tomorrow.]
Rich, lots going on. Balanced acidity, 14.5% jamminess. Black fruit. Concentrated. Blueberry. Great for a jam bomb.
Wow. This is a smooth, mouthful that just goes on and on. Very nice wine and a bargain for the price.
