Massena Moonlight Run 2009

External Reviews for Massena Moonlight Run

Bright purple. Intensely perfumed aromas of red and dark berry preserves, potpourri and olive, with smoke and cracked pepper accents. Smells vaguely like a ripe wine from the northern Rhone. Deep, palate-coating black raspberry and boysenberry flavors show impressive intensity and a bright floral quality. The floral note carries through a very long, sappy and appealingly sweet finish, which shows no rough edges. This is the most successful bottling of this wine I’ve had to date; the grapes are sourced from vines that reportedly average 85 to 150 years of age.

Soft, supple and appealing for its spicy black cherry and tropical fruit flavors, hinting at licorice as the open-weave finish lingers. Grenache, Shiraz, Mataro and Cinsault. Drink now through 2015.

The 2009 “The Moonlight Run” is a blend of 54% Grenache, 24% Shiraz, 16% Mataro and 6% Cinsault, coming from vineyards ranging from 85 to 160 years old. Deep garnet colored with a hint of purple, it displays aromas of warm black raspberries, mulberries, cinnamon stick, white pepper, orange peel and potpourri. Full-bodied and packed with warm berry and spice flavor layers, it has a medium level of velvety tannins, medium-high acid and a long, spicy finish. Delicious now, it should cellar to 2018+.
