On a brightly moonlit Tuesday evening at around eleven o'clock on the Barossa to Clare road, two young blokes are cruising their way to work the midnight shift for the last vintage of the century, in a beat-up old Toyota Corolla “The Brown Bullet”. During the drive home, we would often crave a soft slurpy wine to wash down a hard night's work. Out of this ideal wedecided to join forces and make a Grenache based wine to be enjoyed whenever the mood takes hold. As such Massena Vineyards first wine “The Moonlight Run” was born. The two of us have been mates since High School and have been producing Barossa wine since that initial vintage in 1999, concentrating on the traditional values and techniques which have made the wines of this region unique. We source our fruit from dedicated growers in the North Western Barossa areas of Greenock, Kalimna and Koonunga Hill, providing fruit from dry farmed, low yielding vines up to 120 years of age. Whilst we work mostly with traditional Barossa varieties Shiraz, Grenache and Mataro from these growers, we also enjoy experimenting and trialling new varieties in the Barossa such as Petite Sirah, Barbera, Dolcetto, Roussanne, Saperavi and Tannat. In true artisan style each vineyard section is kept separate during vinification and elevage, until the final blends areassembled. Read less

Bright purple. Intensely perfumed aromas of red and dark berry preserves, potpourri and olive, with smoke and cracked pepper accents. Smells vaguely like a ripe wine from the northern Rhone. Deep, palate-coating black raspberry and boysenberry flavors show impressive intensity and a bright floral quality. The floral note carries through a very long, sappy and appealingly sweet finish, which shows no rough edges. This is the most successful bottling of this wine I’ve had to date; the grapes are sourced from vines that reportedly average 85 to 150 years of age.

Soft, supple and appealing for its spicy black cherry and tropical fruit flavors, hinting at licorice as the open-weave finish lingers. Grenache, Shiraz, Mataro and Cinsault. Drink now through 2015.

The 2009 “The Moonlight Run” is a blend of 54% Grenache, 24% Shiraz, 16% Mataro and 6% Cinsault, coming from vineyards ranging from 85 to 160 years old. Deep garnet colored with a hint of purple, it displays aromas of warm black raspberries, mulberries, cinnamon stick, white pepper, orange peel and potpourri. Full-bodied and packed with warm berry and spice flavor layers, it has a medium level of velvety tannins, medium-high acid and a long, spicy finish. Delicious now, it should cellar to 2018+.
