Maso Canali Pinot Grigio 2016

Editorial Review by Snooth Editorial:

Fuzzy peach, green apple and light lemon notes on the nose. Lemon lime palate with bright acidity, fresh citrus zest and a soft almond finish.

This shows good tension on the nose with notes of fresh pear, a hint of strawberry, some chalky earth notes and very tight white floral tones. On entry this is very focused and precise with a small footprint in the mouth. The wine is lightly styled but fairly aromatic giving off inner mouth perfumes of crisp white fruit, chalk, and woodsy floral tones. There’s plenty of acidity but it’s very well integrated and the wine has enough flesh to conceal it without showing any fat. A nicely styled wine, elegant and with nice cut and a long, subtle quartzy finish. 89pts

Light on the fruit and quite tart, worked well with seafood though.

Pears and green apples on the nose. Ripe fruit on the palate with medium body and lots of acidity. Had with crab cakes and fried shrimp, winner winner.

A decent Pinot Grigio with a very floral taste, hints of pear and melon. Slightly acidic but is hidden very well. Refreshing but more dry than Pinot Grigio usually is. Leaves you with the impression that there was more that could have been done with this wine to improve its taste. Would recommend this to a fan of Pinot Grigio, but with the cavet that Beringer makes Pinot Grigio even better on the most part.

Description: Maso Canali is dedicated to making one wine—a singular, luxurious Pinot Grigio—from the finest grapes grown on the Maso Canali estate in Trentino, the birthplace of Italian Pinot Grigio. Set against the dramatic backdrop of the soaring Dolomites and glimmering Lake Garda, the terroir at these coveted high-altitude vineyards creates a wine with elegant floral notes and bright acidity, while the time-honored practice of drying a portion of the grapes contributes a rich mouthfeel and refined character. Home to wine grapes for more than 500 years, the Maso Canali Estate has cultivated Pinot Grigio since 1893. Winemaking Notes: Upon arrival at the winery, the grapes were crushed, pressed and allowed to cold-settle. The clear juice was then fermented in upright stainless steel fermentors at an average temperature of 64°F for four weeks. A portion of the grapes used in this wine were dried on racks for eight to ten weeks before pressing, and then vinified separately before being added to the final blend. This time-intensive process imparted a unique combination of body, complexity and flavor to the wine, reflecting the signature style of Maso Canali. Finally, the wine was aged on its fine lees for several months prior to bottling. Varietal Content: 88% Pinot Grigio 12% Chardonnay Titratable Acidity: 0.63g/100ml pH: 3.55 Alcohol Level: 12.5% Residual Sugar: .16g/100ml

Home to wine grapes for more than 500 years, the Maso Canali Estate has cultivated Pinot Grigio since 1893. Viticulture Notes: The climate for the 2014 growing season began with ample sunshine and a warm spring. Early bloom and bud development was followed by significant rainfall in late summer. This rainfall made harvest a bit more challenging than usual and necessitated diligence when tending to the vines. Rainfall reduced yields and resulting in a smaller crop of outstanding quality fruit, as vines contributed their energy into fewer clusters. Wines from this vintage are displaying distinctly vibrant flavors and outstanding quality. Winemaking Notes: Upon arrival at the winery, the grapes were crushed, pressed and allowed to cold-settle. Viticulture Notes:Rain played a huge role in the 2013 vintage for the Trentino DOC. Although we were happy to have the natural irrigation for our vines, the increased rainfall did create some uneven flowering and made a harvest a bit more challenging. Despite the wetter growing season, the wines from this vintage display more character than years past and a higher quality taste that offers a great expression of Trentino.
