Masi Mazzano Amarone 2007

Winemaker's Notes:

"An austere and majestic cru, the prototype of Amarone, it draws its unique and instantly identifiable style from the eponymous vineyard, with its ideal Vineyard orientation and all-important altitude. Friable hummus-rich limestone feeds the vines and gives them great personality. The grapes concentrate their aromas during the natural drying process in the drying lofts during the cold winter months. The noble austerity found in this wine is mitigated by soft tannins and velvety elegance. In the 1950s, Masi was a pioneer in establishing the cru or “single vineyard” concept in Italy. The company’s Amarone and Recioto wines from historic cru vineyards are excellent expressions of the different terroir sites in the Valpolicella region, which endow the wines with unique style and typical, easily-recognisable characteristics." -Winery

Smokey and soil driven on the nose, though this remains a bit reticent in the glass. On the palate this wraps itself around your tongue and pulls. A touch tough, rich, chewy and powerfully built it leads off with deep flavors of dried fruits and flowers before changing gears on the midpalate where it turns all chiseled and firm. Dry, firm and vibrant through the palate with a burst of violets and and bright fruit late on the palate, which shows great cut and energy on the palate with gorgeous bright berry fruit on the long , notably tannic finish. A powerhouse but so well balanced and defined. 94pts

The estate's 2001 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Mazzano is a big, dense wine. This expansive, generous red possesses beautiful layers of dark plums, prunes, leather, coffee beans and grilled herbs with superb density and fine overall balance. Although the style is similar to that of the Campolongo di Torbe, the Mazzano shows an additional level of depth and vibrancy. This is an exceptional wine. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2019.
